Well the Inq. seems pretty happy with the 7900GT. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=30582

Not sure about Oblivion. Thought I read a thread that was saying the 1900's were outpacing the 7900's but unsure about the 1800's. My own opinion (since that is the way I went) is if you can get the 512MB version for the same/close to same price as the GT I would go with that.

The 7900GT oc great - you'd be crazy to get a 1800XT over it unless you specifically want an ATI card. If you don't want to oc then I'd get one of those already oc'ed versions available.

Check out the video section in the forums here. Seems a lot of peeps are having issues with the GT's. Memory cooling, loud fans that don't throttle down, artifacts at "stock" clocks. I wouldn't count on overclocking these cards without a new cooler and ram sinks. If it were me I'd at least wait for more user feedback on the GT's.

The 7900GT is about on par w/ the 7800GTX 256mb for quite a bit less money but when you can get an X1800XT 512 for only 338 makes it a really hard choice esp since its in stock @ newegg and the 7900GT isnt' if it was an x1900 of any type no question the ATI card but its not so clear cut performance wise between the X1800 512 and the 7900GT as I recall the x1800 512 beat the 256mb 7800GTX is most of the benchies until the 512mb GTX stomped it. I'm coming from an X800XL so either card is going to destroy what I've got the question is what is the better way to go in this case /sigh I haven't seen any hard numbers w/ an x1800 xt 512 vs a 7900GT all I've got is benches vs the 7800GTX which isn't really apples to apples

Exactly, main reason my vote goes for the ATi. It can simultaneously play AA and AF on many games without hitching. Yet, if you're going for a hardcore frame rate, you'd be better off with a 7900GTX.

That review was done w/ the latest ATI 6.3 drivers seems to have given quite a boost to the X1800XT compared to some older reviews altho there is a newer beta set of nvidia drivers avi they still used pretty current ones. /sigh still waffleing between what to get its kinda a toss up still plus w/ the 7900GT I can go SLI later adding more performance w/out dumping the card where as w/ the 1800 I can't do crossfire since I have an SLI board /sigh

Go with the GT. Better drivers, better warranty, better heat sink & fan, less power usage, better AA, better OpenGL, better H.264 support, better multi card support, etc.

I bought a xfx 7900gt factory OC'd 520. I am getting very respectable performance in Oblivion with my modest Athlon 64 3700+ sandy and 1gb of mismatched single channel ram.

The noise isn't excessive, although it is the loudest component in my case now. I have had zero artifacting after many many hours of playing Oblivion. (really enjoying the game by the way)
