7900gt acting funny >.>

I play oblivion, and occasional I see artifacts...sometimes crazy ones. I have heard many people have the same problem with the 7900gt superclock from EVGA. Most likley it is the memory because there is no heatsinks on them. The strange thing for me is...

I run 3dmark06 just fine.
I run 3dmark05 just fine.
3dmark03 crashes at the beginning of the 2nd test... (every single time..even with the memory downclocked 40mhz)
3dmark01 crashes on the 2nd to last test...every single time aswell.

why does it run 3dmark05 and 06 just fine but it crashes during 03 and 01?

It's your CPU or your PSU.
I remember recently reading an article where a weak PSU resulted in 3dMark crashing in EXACTLY the same spots as you mentioned.
Whta PSU are you using?

Antec SP 2.0 500w

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103937

running 3800+ x-2 1 harddrive 1 dvd/cdrw drive 2 sticks of 512mb ram... tsunami dream case fans ( 2 120mm 1 90mm) and this evga 7900gt co superclock.

Im sure the PSU is adequite for this setup...also my 7800gt co superclock did not have these problems yet consumes more power.

Ill try setting the card to nvidia stock speeds and see what happens.

I do not think the cpu is causing this either as it runs prime95 overnight and never gets above 47C and again..using the card i stepped up from 7800gt co superclock..i did not have any problems.

Wow talk about funny..Well not really, I just got my 7900GT this friday... It worked inititially on 3DMark03&05 I was even able to OC a bit..But my scores were really low(see the following thread)because I had it in the wrong PCI-e slot (2x) So I moved it to the 16X slot and Now I'm in the same boat (crashes consistently on 2nd test on 3dmark03..also if I attempted to OC (even 1Mhz core or memory) wtih cool bits; the screen cycled on and off and the display becomes corrupt). I wiped the HD did a fresh install and tried to run 3mark03 with all stock clocks and once again it failed on the second test. It's odd cause it ran fine the first time (in the 2x slot). So I popped back in my 6800 GT (16X slot) with the same driver (84.21) I was using on my 7900. It runs all the 3dMark tests fine and is able to be overclocked with no ill effects....Any ideas on whats possibly going on??

since then i RMA'd that other card with EVGA... and the new one has 0 problems.

just installed a vf900 and did the volt mod (core+memory) today.

temps never see 60C and Im running stable (oblivion at all highest settings for 1 hour of forest dweller roundup...running through the woods getting as many creatures to follow me as I can and training them all togeather lol... game runs piss slow with 20 dudes behind you but i find it great for artifact testing....)

anyway stable at

681 core and
1876 memory

and climbing.... though coolbits wont let me set the memory any higher... ; ;

rma your card.. test the new one well...if its stable use a good aftermarket cooler...a conductive pen...a #2 pencil... a voltmeter..a paperclip...macguivre (spell?) and check out your absurd overclock.

Yep, I just got an EVGA CO Thursday, and it worked fine at first. It didn't OC much (528/810), but it didn't crash in any games - it just didn't seem to be running as well as it should. I just switched from an ATI card so I thought it must need a clean install. I re-formatted, and all was well. Al my games ran great at stock speeds. Then I tried coolbits again, and the OC was lower (510/790), and it gave me the wierd black screen off/on like problem. So I turned off the PC and went to bed. Today, I played some more, and it detected 508/747 in coolbits, and gave the black screen problem again. Then I tried playing games at the stock 500/750 and got wierd lines and corruption in 2 different games. Looks like it goes back on Monday.

damn that sucks! mine came stock at 550/1580 and would OC to 587/1750 with the zalman on it and no volt mods. i didn't try it with the stock cooler though >.>

when did you get your card? Mine was sent a few days ago...I hope it isn't bad. I have a theory that they make sure RMAd cards are good quality and even speed binned. Every time some one has an RMAd card it clocks higher. To get 681 on 1.4V is very good and even speedbinned XFX ones don't always hit that.

I can tell you it's probably not your PSU because I have the exact same PSU and it powers a dual core proc and a volage hungry X1900XT without issues.
