7900GT a thing of the past? Can I SLI mine with a 7950?

I searched and didn't come up with anything, so I'm hoping someone here knows. Thanks in advance.

I have a 7900GT KO (EVGA) in my current machine, and I was thinking since my next build is going to be a Core2Duo, I'd probably want to also fool around with SLI since I've yet to try it. Problem is, this video card is long gone, replaced by the 7950, I believe. Would there be any way to get it working in SLI with a 7950, or do I need to work on getting a used card if I want to go that route?

Welcome to the reality of the "SLI upgrade." By the time you need it, your card is out of production, and there's a new card that's faster than two old ones. You can only combine two cards of the same type in SLI, so a 7950gt will not work with a 7900gt.

I heard there was a new driver in development (like several months away) that would allow SLI with cards of mixed generations, i.e. 7600 GT w/ 8600 Ultra. Or maybe that was crossfire? A feature like this would be kinda cool, but probably not very practical.

My understanding is that SLI 2.0 will allow mixing generations and would be announced in march.

I'd suggest dumping the card while it still has SOME value and picking up a next gen card. I tried SLI on my 7900GT's and it was simply a pain in the butt to configure. A single card was better in alot of incidences. 8800 is coming down in price....

Bingo!

One of the many reasons why SLI/CF = waste of money 97% of the time.
