I just got my 7900GS a few days ago and the thing is freakin loud when in 3d apps/games, is this normal? Also what rez/game/fps do you get on the 7900gs?

Yep its common with newer mid/high end video cards. Only solution is to buy aftermarket cooler. My X1800XT was way to loud.

I can't even tell it is on.

1920 x 1200 lock-on, wow ect. 40-60 fps.

Mine is on its way here now. Hopefully it's not too loud. It will be replacing an X700 Pro so I am also hoping to see some nice performance gains.

My wife hasn't ordered mine yet... I think she is teasing me with it. :disgust:

I have a BFG. When I played CS:S the first time on it, I heard a muffled whirling sound that I thought was coming from my roommate's room. It was that loud. Now I've gotten used to the noise and pretend I don't hear it when it's running like that. However, the weird thing is that CS:S drives it to the limit but Oblivion doesn't...

And my results: CS:S / 1280x1024 / 4xAA 8xAF / 110 FPS

And no, my pipes did not unlock.

My PNY is insanely loud, or at least it was until I installed the 91.28 drivers, now the fan never revs up at all for some reason.

I posted this thread a while back.

Voltmodded mine for 1.4v and added the Zalman VF900 VGA cooler .... very nice card and runs everything I play quite well. The stock HS was not getting it done.

If you have a BFG 7900GS, you may be able to unlock your pipes. A batch of them used G71 cores (if you're one of the lucky ones, remove the cooler and look at the markings on the GPU; you should be able see the G71 designation). The others don't unlock, though - nVidia lasers the connection between the pipes so there is no way to do this through software.

Is it louder than your CPU & PSU fan? My 6800 GT is....I can hear the fan for it over everything else in my box.

My 7900GS is a Pny (got it when Best Buy had them for $150). RivaTuner shows that it is a G71 core. I tried to unlock the extra pipelines, but after rebooting RivaTunder shows 20pp/7vertex in the opening screen. When I go into the custom view it shows 24pp. I ran 3DMark05, still got around the same score as before (running at 525/660) so I guess they did not unlock. I can push my 7900GS to about 575mhz on the core (and that's with a Zalman cooler) but that pushes the limits of it's stability. My memory is maxed where it is, I got a bit of a dud overclocker. Still works fine for me as is at 1680x1050 though.

I've noticed that XFX had several 7900 GS cards, with names as 480M, 525M and 600M. In my opinion the best buy would be the cheapest one, the 480M. Would you happen to know if there is any difference between these 3 cards? Are we talking different memory, worse cooling or is it simply the clock speed that's different?

If yes, then why not buy the most reasonable and clock it up?

590/807, EVGA 7900gs KO. I tried to get 600 on the core, but ATITool showed errors when doing an artifact test, and it hadn't even totally heated up yet. I"m using the stock cooler still, but i'm standing a 120mm fan on the floor of the case leaning against it to blow air right under there at the heatsink/fan, and I have my door removed from my case when I game. I'm hitting somewhere in the mid-sixties under load. I REALLY need to get a better cooler so I can quit looking so ghetto:) I may try to volt mod and see what she can do once I get some better cooling.
