Hi,

I'm considering buying the 7900GS or the X1900XT for my new system. My main concern is running temp., idle and load. Does anyone know how these cards compare in terms of heat, power consumption, stability, etc.?

Thanks!

Heat: x1900xt 256mb. Its extremely loud fan keeps it surprisingly cool. The gs, probably not so much.
Power: Consumption: 7900gs. It is basically a 7900gt with 20 pipes instead of 24, so it like the 7900gt will be low power consumtion.
Stability: I assume you mean ocing. The 7900gs will oc very well, but the x1900xt will smoke it at stock.
The 7900gs is over $40 cheapert too.
Hope this helped!:D

x1900xt is more than the 7900gs in every single way, more heat, more temp, more fps, more image quality features.
but a x1900xt dumps theheat outsidethe case and a 7900gs dumps it in the case.

.... not quite moonboy...

its

7950gt > x1900xt 256mb = 7900gt > 7900GS

Id say get a X1900XT. They are around 300bucks. And youll get wayyy better performance for your money. Id say thats prolly the best bang for the buck card out on the market :D

Yes, the videocards do go like that. Because the 7950gt is a 7900gt w/ 512mb. The 7900gt gives the x1900xt 256mb a run for its money its each bench. They are extremely close. like 2 fps off, Just get a high clocked version of a 7900gt if you want cheapness. You can get a good eVGA 7900gt for like 240 or something. But your best bet is just gettin a X1900XT they are fast like insane and great for all games. Except you should get a VF900 right away, so you can OC it and cause its terribly loud and annoying....

....not quite skylin!

with the exception of quake 4 and modern air combat, the x1900 xt 256 whoops even the 7950gt KO by AT LEAST 5 frames in virtually EVERY game (not extremely close like you stated)

and i'm not biased toward ati or nvidia side also....i've owned many products from both sides and even had 7900 gtx sli

7950GT has 512MB framebuffer. It should definitely give a better gaming experience than X1900XT 256MB at high resolutions. This is an argument purely based on performance. As for purchase advice, one should go with X1900XT 512MB for the same price of 7950GT.

indeed, the 512mb framebuffer of 7950gt is giving it an advantage over x1900xt's 256mb and the performance gap narrowed as the resolution increased to 1920x1200 w/ 4aa/8af....but the x1900 xt still leads by a pretty wide margin

It depends. At some point it isn't a matter of bandwidth but a matter of shader/texture processing in which the core and its capabilities are more important.

Yeah, that 7900GT and GS are much better performers than the 7950GT

junglerecker,,

Here are the 2 boards that I am looking at. I told you to look at the 7900GS in the other forum. However, prices have changed. The x1900xt is $235 after rebate while the 7900gs is holding at $220. Only a $15 difference. I am leaning on x1900xt now. But remember the BFG 7900GS is factory overclock and the x1900xt (ati radeon) is at the low end of the scale.

I don't what to go crazy on vid cards right now. DX10 is right around the corner.

Here is the REAL ladder, at nominal resolutions

7950GX2 > X1950XTX > X1900XTX > X1900XT 512 > X1900XT 256 > 7950GT > 7900GT > X1900GT > 7900GS
