7900GS issue

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his 7900gs regarding the heat being outputting by it. Currently one panel is off of his case with a small desk fan blowing air into the case. The room is set to about 79F.

I used 2 separate programs to check the temperature of the card and they both read a insane 160C. I did a touch test and the card gave my finger a light burn. After putting the desk fan on the computer the temperature dropped to 56C idle.

So far I've checked the heat sink and fan and both seem to be working.

Anyone know what the problem could be? I'm surprised the graphics card hasn't exploded by now since it has been this way for quite some time.

What programs did you use to check the temps ?

If it was really running 160C...one would think it would just fry itself.

I used ntune and the nvidia scanner. I don't think it was really 160c but it was the hottest computer part i have ever felt.
