On Anand's benches, I dont see any benchmark where the 7900GT smokes the 1900GT. Pretty even in most, then others the 1900GT winning. That is hardly smoking

I have a 7900gs myself. They overclock pretty crazy. 600/1800 here

My X1900GT has overclocked well. 712 on the core and 1584 on the memory here. I play BF2 at 1680x1050, Max settings, with 6xAA just fine. I would personally go for the 7900GS though over the X1900GT. I only got mine because I squeezed an in store credit deal from them and it was the best card that they had. (The other alternatives were a $250 7600GT and X1600)

The 7900GS has more of everything other than pixel shaders when compared against an X1900GT. I've got a 7800GT that is at 575/1300 as well, so these 7900GS's aren't that tempting at least to me anyway. They do seem to be a decent alternative, but I'm just tired of Nvidia re-releasing cards. ATI needs R600 to hit, Nvidia needs G80 to hit. I think DX9 is really getting old faster and faster.

Here's a link to a whole lot of reviews on the 7900GS (Australian site). It seems at stock the x1900gt competes more with the 7900gt, but with a little overclocking (these things [7900GS] seem to generally see 550-600 on the core, without vmods), the 7900GS generally beats the x1900gt. If only they could be unlocked......(from what i've read, the extra pixel quad and what-not are physically disabled, but not 100% on that).

EDIT: Just a question for anyone who owns a 7900GS, how's the noise levels on it? (With stock cooler)

Yes, you're correct. The only X1900GT's that can be unlocked are the "Pro" cores. (...good thing there's a lot of those *sarcasm*....) However, most--all but two on the internet--have the "XL" cores, physically limiting them to 12 pipes/36 pixel shaders.

Seriously the X1900GT isn't a bad card, but unless you really want HDR+AA and better AF, the 7900GT/GS, X1800XT/GTO would be better all around. The only game I've found it to perform quite well on is BF2. FEAR's benches gave me an average of 30 fps with a minimum of 14 fps. My beefed up 7800GT had a minimum of 19 or so IIRC. Even after overclocking the X1900GT's core 137 Mhz and its memory 384 Mhz FEAR hasn't put out much better results than that. BF2's was nicer though.

I think the 7900GS SLI would be about the same as my old 7800GT SLI since this card is basically a 7800GT overclocked and core-shrunk. Good price though, as always, competition is soooooooooooo good.

I find mine to be noticeably louder than the 7600GT it replaced. I wouldn't say it's too loud for my tastes, but everyone's different.

For $290, you could've gotten two 7900GS in SLI.. which would own the XFX.

Anyway I got the GS for $170 AR, not too shabby, plus lifetime warranty. I think deal of the century is when I got my 1GB micro cruzer for free + $10

I can't stand it. It's loud. Very loud (in 3d).

Mine is only loud on boot. I've never heard it spin up to a point where I could easily hear it, even in heavy 3D and OCed to 600/1800. Oh, and I haven't messed with any fan settings, either. The fan was inaudible with just the drivers installed (ie: no 3rd party tools to control the fan).

I used RivaTuner to put the fan on 25% on 2d and 3d. The heat went up about 7C but thats it. I can't even notice it now. I'm using an Antec P180 so the 3 120mm fans are probably helping a bit so I can keep the fan speed down like this.

I saw a Sapphire X1900GT on sale yesterday @ Newegg for $199 without any rebates. Now I don't see Sapphire on there at all. It was new retail and not open box either. Ah well.
