7800GT isn't $300+. RTPE reports a low price of $280 before rebate and $268 after rebate on the eVGA 7800GT CO SE.

the 7900GT will basically be an OCed 7800GTX, perhaps with some more optimisations. I imagine it will be a lot more overclockable than a 7800.

I thought the 7900GT would be an o/c 7800GT making it as fast as the 7800GTX. And the 7900GTX would be an o/c 7800GTX making it 8-10% faster than the 7800GTX 512.

same core setup as their predecessor, but on 90nm clocked faster.
7900GTX 24 pipes @ 650Mhz
7900GT 20 pipes @ 550Mhz (or something along those lines)

I think that the 7800gtx 256 and 7900gt will be very similar in performance. But the 7900gt might turn out to be a really nice overclocker.

Obviously the 7900GT will be better than the 7800GT. I'm hoping its as least as good as the 7800GTX. I have no doubt it'll be a decent overclocker. You just know eVGA will make one or two overclock versions of it. Cant wait to see the final release benchmarks.
