I can either get a eVGA 7900 GS KO (256mb) for $120 or eVGA 7950 GT (512mb) for $225, both after MIR.

My system -

P4 3.4
1GB Ram
500 PSU

I'll be holding onto this processor for about 2 years. And I don't plan on upgrading to Vista until then. Is it worth the extra $100 to get the 7950? Is my processor going to bottleneck a 7950? I will probably upgrade to 2GB RAM when (if) prices come down.

Any suggestions?

As a side note, I have a X1950 Pro that I'm going to return. COD2 ran faster with my old X700 and nobody seems to be able to explain why. My system is scoring about 3600 on 3dMark06 with the X1950 Pro.

I would say the low score in 06 is due to the cpu. But, why not save C-note, and get the GS ?

where can you get such a thing
I would go for 7950 personally as it is push faster than a GS.

Is the 7900GS roughly half the performance of the 7950GT for roughly half the price?

Well with my 7900GS and my 6300 I receive 7800 in 3dmark 05 so it is not all bad, just purchase a cheapo and wait till next year to do a full upgrade. I sold my 1900XTX for the 7900GS because it will hold me over till R600 :)

IRRC, the 7950 GT is about 25% faster than the 7900 GS. Personally, I would go with the GS and save some money for the next upgrade. The 7900 GS is essentially a 7800 GT.

The GS it is. I think the 7950 would be overkill with my P4 3.4 processor.

Thanks for everyone's opinion.

BTW, the 7950 GT is advertised in my local Fry's add this morning.

that's a pretty good deal on the 7950GT, i saw this XFX 7900GT for $189 after MIR, and this eVGA 7900GT KO for $199 after MIR, a couple of nice deals you might want to consider.
