Who's gonna bite the bullet first?

Update: Just saw AnandTech review as well as a quick follow-up correction.

So no 8 channel audio via HDMI. I thought that was the whole point of this chipset? While this may not matter to many users here, but this was/is a feature that 785G can further distinguish itself from other platforms as the most ideal solution for HTPC crowd. I can't help but disappointed at AMD's execution. It's unclear to me, even after reading Gary's explanation, whether this issue is due to hardware, software, or yet another mess created by, oh so great, DRM.

I wonder if AMD was aiming to go for too low-budget platform at the cost of better functionality. Granted the competition is cut-throat, but I think users will gladly pay extra $10~$20 for more complete feature set. AMD can also leave the ultra-budget sector to other chipsets (such as 680G/780G).

From the look of it, there just isn't a compelling reason to upgrade to 785G from 780G let alone 790GX if you're using the latter products without an issue.

He published a quick preview of the available board as well.

It looks like the board itself is stable and mature, but the drivers for HD playback (including 8 channel audio support) aren't ready yet. Surprisingly low price for a new product, me thinks.

No worries @ Gary. Sheet happens.

I never pulled the trigger, anyway - I started drooling over the PWM on the Asus 785g and will (patiently, I hope) wait for an AM3 mATX variant or go ahead and snag the Gigabyte.

And not knowing what AMD 'Maui' is I can't really comment on the LPCM thang. Is this a new chipset or add-in card? Is this how we will finally get TrueHD?

I do the analog multi-channel PCM out to my receiver, anyway.

And I would have to buy a new receiver to pass LPCM via HDMI - that would cut back on my computer hardware allowance - LOL
