Basically what the title says. I am not sure which pair to get and I cant get the 8120 and 7850 because its about 50 dollars over my budget.

I know the 8120 and 4170 have similar game performance except in a few select games but knowing that these few games do perform better with multiple cores is it worth it to get the 8120 just for a little bit of future proofing?

Firstly you should answer the questions in the sticky.

Secondly you're just going to be better off with Intel CPU's for a gaming system, not to mention there are VERY few titles out currently that can scale off more than 2 cores, and most of those don't need to. One of the only truly CPU taxing games out right now is BF3 for mass multiplayer, it can force some of the best CPUs out today to work at full load.

sorry, my pc is going to be primarily for gaming and I have a budget of around 700. I already have all the parts except the processor and gpu (I have a 1080p 120hz tv that I'm going to use as a monitor) which is why I'm looking at the fx series processors (already have and am3+ board). finally I'm trying to finish getting parts in the next 2 weeks to finish putting my computer together.

BF3 multiplayer is one of the games that uses multiple cores but so does Dirt 3, which is less known but I am planning on playing.

Iirc the entire DIRT series scales much better on nVidia card than it does for AMD cards, have you though about using something like a 560 Ti instead?

That aside I'd say go for the 7850 and just grab the 4120 to go with it, you'll likely benefit more from the stronger video card in most situations, not to mention the 4120 should be adequate for playing most of your titles.

Either way I doubt it compares very well to the i3 2100 for most titles, but seeing as how the OP already bought a board it doesn't leave much choice aside from trying to fit in a board + CPU for less than the price of the 4170 (you'd be running on a Pentium for that).

FX 4100 OCED outperforms a i3-2120

I'd like to see the benchmarks proving this, although this does seem familiar (haven't we discussed this before?). Most games only utilize 2 cores, and the i3 architecture is quite a lot more powerful than anything AMD has out currently, I'm assuming you need a pretty substantial overclock just to match the stock clocks of the 2100.

That's because almost all games will run faster on Intel's recent architectures, not because they were somehow coded to work better for Intel.

Can't you return the motherboard? You'd be far better off with Intel.

Microcenter for the win once again! :)

Rwturning items is a hassle but your better off getting an intel combo these days.
