I currently have a water cooled 7800X running all cores at 4.2GHZ in my Aorus Gaming 7. I use my machine to run ONYX RIP, Adobe Creative Suite, and play games such as BFV, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and soon Red Dead Redemption II. I have an RTX 2080TI.

Today I bought an X570 MB and a 3800X to replace the i7-3820 in a computer at work we use mostly for MIS and running Adobe Indesign. Nothing very taxing at all.

I am now contemplating upgrading my 7800X to the 3800X and putting my 7800X in the 3820. My only concern is that my 7800X has Quad Channel memory and more slots, as well as a passively cooled chipset and I don't want to go to the trouble of doing two MB swaps if the 3800X isn't going to be any faster than my current 7800X.

Pretty sure the 3800x would beat the 7800x@4,2 in gaming. And for that matter in most mutiltasking applications as well.

6 older cores@4,.2 compared to Ryzens latest@ 8 cores at about 3.9 minimum, most likely will run 4.2 or so most cores loaded. I shouldn;t even be close.

What do you mean by putting your 7800X in the 3820? The 7800X uses a different socket.

Replace 7800x combo with 3800x combo. If game worthy.

Replace 3820 with 7800x combo.

.
Thats the way I took it. And from everything I can find, the 3800x should absolutely beat the 7800x.

Ok. I appreciate the reassurance. I was simply concerned about losing quad channel memory. I generally upgrade every 2-3 years, but thought this might be a decent upgrade to hold me over until we see what AMD and Intel have at the end of next year.

What resolution do you play at? If you're that worried about losing quad channel support, then you might want to try one of the new Cascade Lake X CPUs that will launch later this month. Though the gaming performance of that will most likely be lower than a 3800X. Of course if you play at 4K there will be no difference.

And if he waits that long, the 3950x will be out, and the new quad channel threadrippers as well, and they might beat the 3950x.

I play at 4k. Still waiting for a faster graphics card that can smoothly run 4k with Ray Tracing :)

Then I don't really think there is much to gain by getting a new CPU, unless you also play with lowered graphical settings. You could try overclocking your 7800X though, especially the mesh. 4.2 GHz is kinda low for Skylake X. 4.5 should be doable.

My machine runs under full load 24/7 so I tend to be conservative with the overclock. It has to be rock solid stable and I don't want to go above stock voltages.

You're leaving some performance on the table if you don't overclock the mesh, which is 2.4 GHz default if I'm not mistaken. According to Silicon Lottery, all 7800Xs can do 4.6 GHz non-AVX at 1.25V.

I will explore that. It is looking like the new Threadripper might be coming out sooner rather than later. I might just jump from my 7800X to that.

I would wait till the newest threadripper, x3950 and cascade lake x come out before deciding. What memory are you using today? The 10980 might make sense since you are currently on x299 and have a high end board.

I think the new cascade lake x is a new socket. But the 3950x or the new threadripper are definitely good choices.
