Right now I have a 7800GTX, and I'm thinking about changing (upgrading?) to an X1800XT. The price will be right around $15 after I sell my GTX. Is this worthwhile, or is it kind of pointless?

Right now I game at 1280x1040, and game of the moment is Oblivion. Specs on computer are in my sig :)

EDIT: Instead of losing $15, I'd gain $15 from this deal. Any reason not to?

I was trying to spot some reviews and it seems like you're right... th x1800xt man handles the 7900GT and is somewhat close to the 7900GTX. Now just to sell my 7800GTX and I'll get this boy ordered :p

Edit: Unless people convince me to not buy the X1800XT :)

Probably... but if you're alluding to nvidia having superior OGL performance, wasn't it in Q4 that the 1800 hung with the 7800?

ATi cant do SSAA in OpenGL. The thing is Q4 had better graphics than Doom3 and performed better on most cards compared to doom3.

But go for it. Get the X1800XT, if your playing oblivion. Personally, i wouldnt be bothered to change because the performance increase overall in minimal. (in the games i play though), but instead saving for my next DX10 card or something like that.

For $15, no doubt. Unless you dont play with AA, the X1800XT will be considerably faster, especially in Oblivion, and can also do HDR+AA in Oblivion.

From a 7800GTX, I'd go with either a 7900GT (if you're willing to vmod and oc) or a 1900XT. Yes, an X1800XT is a bit faster in oblivion than your current card but you can always oc your card and the hassle involved in sellig the GTX and ordering/installing a new card isn't worth it imo.

you'll see a little bit of a difference going to an X1800XT. dont expect like leaps and bounds better though...of course you knew that already im sure. hehe...

You'll be able to do HDR+AA (as soon as my X1800XT comes, I'll tell ya at what settings =), but remember the X1800XT is a hot and noisy card. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't bother with this sidegrade.

There are plenty of people who want a 7800GTX to SLI, you should be able to get > $300 for it without too much work. Now, sidegrading and getting $50 toward an aftermarket fan or other upgrades, that's a different story.

Edit: also, the best warranty I can find on a X1800XT is a 2 year from Sapphire. Don't know if that matters to you, but you should consider things other than raw benchmark preformance when deciding on whether to pull the trigger.

Well thought out post. I appreciate it. I guess I can hold out til a DX10 card... but HDR + AA in Oblivion sounds enticing so I'll wait on your report :)

For only $15 difference, the x1800xt seems like a good deal. In most games the difference will not be huge, but in Oblibvion you'd get a noticeable improvement in speed, and have the option of better IQ features.

I'd definetely get it for a $15 difference. Your 7800GTX gets manhandled by the X1800XT here.

I tried HDR + 4XAA in Oblivion yesterday and it wasn't pretty (sig system). I haven't had much time to tinker with video settings, but I had everything at pretty midrange settings and ended up with a slideshow during fights. This was at 1440x900 res. I found that with 6XAA alone it performed better than with HDR and no AA.

I suck at that game. I made it to an Oblivion gate and got no more than about 50 feet before getting absolutely destroyed. I mean, it wasn't even close.

Yeah, a few times I was gang raped by a bunch of dremora the moment I stepped through the gate. The trick is to fight them one at a time...which is easier if you're a stealth character.
