I know that you guys have argued this back and forth but I want to make sure I make the right decision in buying a video card. I am usually a Nvidia guy and have always had good luck with Nvidia but people are telling me that this card is better. I was planning on buying a ASUS EN7800GTX/2DHTV/512M Geforce 7800GTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card Link but now I am reconsidering getting the ASUS Extreme AX1900XTX/2DHTV Radeon X1900XTX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 CrossFire Link.
Anyone have any idea what the G71 is supposed to cost?
I am putting it with:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD64 4400+ Toledo X2
2x74gig 10,000RPM Raptor Drives
2x1gig sticks of OCZ Titanium
X-FI Sound
LIAN LI/KOOLANCE (watercooled) case
2- 74gig 10,000RPM Western Digital Raptor
DVD Burner
Hiper Type-R 580W Modular Power Supply (SLI certified)I have been told that this is a good Power Supply LINK( can ya guys give me any insight on whether this is good or what to go with)

If you want it right now I'd say get the x1900xt. If you don't want it right now wait to see how g71 turns out and then decide.

I would steer clear of the GTX512 unless you somehow manage to get it for under $600.

I myself just installed the x1900xt ('Upgrading' from a GTX256) and I'm wondering if it's even worth it. If I do end up keeping it, the fan definitely has to be replaced, it's extremely loud compared to the reference GTX256 cooler.

If I had that much money I'd probably grab a X1900XT and if the G71 is signifigantly faster across the board then I'd sell the XT and buy a G71

Your choices

1) Buy an X1900XT or XTX if you want to overclock to the max
2) Wait for the G71 and compare to X1900, if you can't wait then see option 1

I would not recommend you get the GTX512, IMO not worth it

btw I just picked up the X1900XT (will arrive soon), so voted that way

If you're going to be dropping that much on a Video Card, and are even considering waiting on the G71, then I'd wait go ahead an wait to see what the G71 can do. Rumours make the G71 sound pretty good.

You seem to have more money than common sense, so I say head on over to eBay and place your bid on a 7800GTX 512MB. Maybe you can get a used one for 800 bucks.

Buy the X1900 XTX and if the G71 blows it away then sell the X1900 on ebay and get the G71. You might lose $100 but it's better then waiting for a card that nobody knows for sure when it's coming out.

Given that G71 should be announced March 9-11th, availability in stores might actually be 1.5 months away from now. Did you already purchase your system components? If you are in the process of ordering, I would get the X1900XT. There is no point in letting your components just sit there. If you can wait and have a decent system or don't play any games right now, by all means wait. In other words, you should only upgrade when there is a need -- and there was a need now, the opportunity cost of waiting by not playing games for example would be too high not to buy now.

"Buy 7800GTX 512mb Then gamble the idea of reselling" oh oh 0 votes. Rollo must have not gotten to this thread yet ;)

My prediction is that the 7900 GTX will be faster then the X1900 XTX.
However, I also assume judging by the currents state of things, that the G71 will be at least $100 more expensive. Whether it will be $100 worth more powerful remains to be seen.
My guess is that it probably will.

I'm buying the X1900 XTX as soon as the RD580 chipset hits the market, but I'll probably sell both of these if the 7900 GTX ends up being 'that' much better.
Does'nt mean I'm going to hold off buying the X1900 though! :D

No, but I dont care if the RD590 chip is 'better'! As long as the R580 is very good. Which judging from the previews they most certainly are.
The issue here is that the RD480's are not very good, in comparison to the latest Nforce4 SLI chipsets anyway.

Also, unlike the G71 which is due to be released in a month or two or more! The RD580 is just 1-2 weeks away. So its definately worth the wait!

SiTes, have you mentioned what monitor you have yet? I didn't catch it.

I haven't voted yet because your monitor will make a difference for my vote. If you're on a 19" LCD, I'm gonna go with "None of the above".

Also, you've already bought most of your components and are ready to build pretty much immediately, correct? If that's the case, waiting seems pointless. Buy something now so you can build the darn thing.

You could buy an Evga 7800gt.And then use the step up if it is warranted.if it's not worth it you can buy another gt and sli.

Not everyone is comfortable "OCing $500-$600 cards to the max" nts. Some of us don't think those 5 extra fps are worth risking that much money?

It looks like you'll have a monitor that can support a 1600x1200 resolution at a decent refresh rate then, so I'd suggest that you purchase the 1900XT. It's a good price for that kind of performance right now. Even when the G71 comes out, whether it's faster or not, available or not, you likely won't be disappointed that you didn't wait. You'll still have a VERY fast card that will handle the games you want to play without a hitch.

Just for quick reference, BF2 benchmarks from Anandtech (don't have America's Army):

1600x1200 w/ 4xAA
ATI XTX.....75
ATI 9XT.....72
ATI 8XT.....60
GTX512.....66
GTX256.....46

As you can se, the ATI cards handle this game better right now. Purchase and enjoy.

I'm not planning on OC'ing my X1900 either.

My comment was meant as buy the XT for stock or if you are into OCing then get the XTX as it should reach a higher clock.

For stock IMO the XT is a better deal.

This is a fairly good plan. You could opt to sell it for not much loss if the G71 option and SLI option don't appeal, and buy a X1900 for less than they cost now.

I vote for this.

So then dont overclock to the max. Overclock a little or dont overclock at all!

One of the whole points of the XTX version existing is that its basically a pre-overclocked XT for those who might not want to overclock themselves.
Dont then say "yes but its $100 more expensive", you cant have the best of all words.
My advice to that is, learn how to overclock.
