7800GTX - System Build Threads

Ok, after reading many threads about, "How does my system look?", etc, I have seen many people strongly not recommending the 7800GTX, but rather recommend a 6800GT, if the buyer isn't using a 24-30" monitor.

Ok, I'll hand it to you, I agree. But there is one drawback, I agree for RIGHT NOW. Sure, you won't really see a difference between a 7800GTX and a 6800GT in games right now, but for most of these builders, like myself, we plan to keep our rigs for more than a year. By that time, there will be a big difference in a 6800GT and a 7800GTX for those who want to play on higher settings.

Basically, will some of you consider how long these guys are wanting to keep it?

Thanks.

The problem is, a lot of people on these forums, myself included, are habitual upgraders. They are looking for a solid base right now, and then will upgrade when the time comes. I currently have an X800XL, once I see what the R520 looks like, I'll be upgrading to either it, or the 7800GTX. A lot of people aren't in it for the long haul, they like new toys, and they like them when they are brand new and shiny...🙂

But more power to those looking for something to last a while!

I'm in AGP boat.. so I would need the faster single card.. at this point.. it would be a 7800 AGP version... Haven't upgraded my system since the Ti4600 but got a free FX 5700 card..

I just need the dual dvi and they only come from higher end cards..

You make a good point Waylay, if you want to build a machine now and not touch it for several years. But if you don't mind upgrading I just think its more cost effective to get a 6800gt now, then in a year or so when more demanding games come down the pipe that will take advantage of the 7800 upgrade then when the price is more like $350-400 and sell the 6800gt.

And the idea that someone who has to have the newest (7800) is the type person who won't upgrade their computer for 2-3 years is laughable. Look at yourself, like me your rig is less than a year old, and you've already upgraded to a SD processor and now upgrading the video card. Do you seriously expect me to believe once you get the 7800 your not going to upgrade again for 2-3yrs, yea right.

I never upgraded my processor or my graphics card. I said I was going to get an X850XT, but changed my mind. That's why the items that I have already bought are marked with (have) in my sig. And I was going to get a 3500+ Venice, but now I am thinking about a San Diego 3700+, since it isn't much more.

It's not like I already had those parts. The parts in my sig are just the ones I will eventually order. As of now, I only have a case, HDD, Combo Drive, and Accesories (lights, etc).

Trust me, lol, I'm used to keeping machines for an extended amount of time. I'm running a 1.5GHz P4 Willamette, 256MB SDRAM PC133, and a Geforce 2 MX400 right now.

I didn't make my processor upgrade since 2002.. went from dual xeon 2.4 to dual xeon 3.2. So that has been over 3 years. I'll probably get the 7800 and till i build a new pc in 2 years.. i defintely wont be upgrading..

if u buy a 6800gt for around 300 buks now and sell it later ull probably get around $100 then rebuy a gtx when its down to 400 that equals to.. hm 600 buks! exactly what the gtx costs.. u dont save any money when u do that other that and also not being about to play with the 7800.. 300-100= 200 <money u lost +400 <for the gtx in the future = 600 im no computer expert but this is simple math and by the time the gtx goes down much better cards will come out.. all ur doing is keeping urself outdated without saving much money if any

Yeah, I mean if you are going to spend $400 on a mid range card, you might as well spend another $150 to get the best.

Ok, I give🙂 If you guys want to spend $600 on a video card who am I to say otherwize.

I can't help but find it a bit comical, that your currently running a MX400 and are so certain you need a 7800. Thats kind of like saying your driving a Saturn and you must have a Lamborgini because a Porche isn't good enough. But to each his own, I'll keep chugging along on my measly 6600gt at 80-100fps until I actually need more.

Yeah I'm sure the 6800GT will be $100😕 1/4 it current price. When you get ready to sell one for $100 make sure I'm the first one you offer it to 🙂

It's obvious you guys have a hardon for the 7800 and thats OK, just own up to the fact that you want the latest and greatest and are willing to pay a severe premium for it. But quit trying to justify it, or posting here looking for validation that your making a the right decision.

I dont play BF2, I get 114fps in HL2 demo and 80-90fps in Doom3 time demo on my 17" monitor. And all the games I play are smooth as butter

The PNY 6800 Vanilla can be had for $150 all the time, and it consistently overclocks to gt speeds. I suggest you pick up one of those 😀

I would suggest spending your money on going back to grade school.
