7800GTX SLI to 8800GT??

Would this be a worthwhile upgrade? AFAIK 7800GTX SLI loses little to a single 8800GTX (when SLI works), and therefore should keep up with a single 8800GT most of the time. Am I right or wrong??

Thanks..

The 8800GT is a hairline under the performance of a GTX... it is the cheapest card where you can get DX10 at reasonable framerate. So as far as performance goes you will be getting very little...

However this assumes SLI is working for whatever game you want... with a single GT you will be gaurenteed this level of performance... not so with sli...

Also, I recommend you upgrade to 4GB of ram before you upgrade your video card. You will see a greater improvement for less money.

I have a simular question. I have 2 7900gtx's sli that I paid alot for and was wondering if I went to 1 8800gt if I will see a performance increase.

Yes, I think it would be. That combination is similar to a single X1950XTX in many recent, shader-heavy games, and the 8800GT is easily twice as fast as that card. Note that the 7800GTX is considerably slower than many of the 7900/7950 cards.

Performance aside, I think this is really a question of money. If your current setup can play what you want at speeds that are acceptable for you, then why upgrade?

because:

selling each GTX for $200= $400

buying ONE 8800GT = $250

youre saving money, also you have a HD encoder chip, and wont see any loss in performance (8800GTX is 2x faster than 7800GTX) and you can play DX10 (providing you have vista)

mmm... list them on ebay with a minimum price above the cost of half a GT... if they sell, go ahead and do it... if they dont then stick with them... If you can really turn them over for 400 then it is an ideal trade atm... they aren't gonna be worth that much later on...

I've been out of the hardware loop for a couple years... but how about a single 7800GTX to a 8800GT? Would it be worthwhile if I'm planning to play BF2142, TF2, CoH: OF, etc.? My monitor's native resolution is 1600 x 1200.

My specs are A64 x2 4200+ @2.75GHz, 2GB RAM, and a single 7800GTX 256MB.

it will give you DX10...

And will probably make it playable at your desired resolution... (compared to current card)

so yea its worth it

Holy crap that was a fast reply... might see how much I can put the 7800GTX in the market for. Only issue is that I've got a SFF (SN25P) and I heard the 8800GT is 9" long. I'd have to remove the CPU fan duct to fit it in.

An 8800GT definitively crushes an 7800GTX in anything...benchmarks, real gaming, etc.

In the enthusiast market (I.E. someone who knows better) the 7800GTX isn't worth much, but you may be able to EBay/Craigslist it and make a few bucks back.

The physical size issue for you is a real issue. I don't know if removing the CPU fan duct is a good idea...no point in sacrificing system stability/longevity for a better video card.

I have 7800GTX's SLIed. I can't touch the 8800GT. In fact I'm considering 8800GT SLI myself. Can't beat the value.

Why keep going SLI when you get beat out by a single card within the next generation? Just wait for the new GTS and be done with it bud :p

A 7900GTX for $200 ? If you do manage it, let me know and i'll sell mine as well.

I am thinking of selling mine for $80. Isnt worth much more than that with what prices are for new cards on Newegg.

Way to resurrect a dead & buried thread...

Amazing what difference a year makes in GPU pricing though, isn't it? I mean today you can snag an 8800GT for $110 versus $250 nine months ago.

yes, maybe for October of 2007, should have looked at the date in the posts :p

also, you were ready to believe the 7900GTX @ $200, but the 8800GT @ $250? did you read anything else on this thread other than "selling each [7900] GTX for $200"?

Yes, I did read the entire thread.

But tell me this, if no one has posted in this thread since October. then WHY is it on the front page of Anand ? Because it was 5 threads down on page one when I found it.
