7800gtx or 1800xt

Currently I?m running two 6600GT in SLI form. I would like to grade but I don?t know which card to go with. The 7800GTX or 1800XT? I know that ATI just released this card and I don?t know much about it to make a choice. I would like to know your input.

The XT hasn't been released yet, but the XL has.
The XT does seemingly outperform the GTX slightly, but it is alos expected to cost more. And the GTX might very well drop in price even more onece the XT is actually released.
Personally I would just get the GTX unless you can wait for a couple of months and see what all the prices do.

If you got the gtx you could sli it now or in the future without to much trouble. I?m not up on cross fire but to me it doesn?t seem to be available now so if you got the gtx you could run the two cards straight of the bat and not have to wait around till cross fire appears. Also the gtx is available in good quantities now so you have your choices of brand with good prices compared to the new radeon. Just my opnions.

No you can't. You can use a single ATi card in an SLI motherboard, or you can use 2 ATi cards in Crossfire on a Crossfire motherboard.
Since oyu already have an SLI motherboard, I would suggest getting a 7800GTX, because then if in future you want to upgrade, a second 7800GTX for SLI may be an option.
Getting an X1800XL would give you a slower single card and would also not leave you room to upgrade to dual cards unless ATi and nVidia work out a system to allow SLI on ATi chipsets and Crossfire on nVidia chipsets.

Many reviews have shown the X1800XT scales pretty well w/ AA and HDR enabled as compared to the 7800GTX. In fact, it's designed so you can turn on all the goodies without taking too much of a performance hit. Some users have also claimed that ATI also manages the Image Quality better.

However, expect it to be lot more expensive than the 7800GTX at launch, and Crossfire is a joke compared to SLI. If you plan to go two cards, don't get it. Also waiting for prices to settle after launch is also a good idea if you plan to get the X1800XT.

There are rumors that nVidia is planning to release the G72 sometime early next year...

I though ATI was supposed to have equal to slightly better IQ as NVidia until I read this:

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2551

There's some truely ugly stuff in there.

the XT and XL oc like beast's also.

from what i heard on xtreme forums the xl oc's to xt speeds check it out they are basically the same card plus it's a singel slot.

For the most part, the X1800xt and 7800gtx are about equal (from a thread i saw in the video section).

Personally, I'd take the 7800gtx for these reasons:
1. More pipelines, could be better for next gen games
2. Tests show that minimum framerate is better on the 7800gtx than the x1800xt
3. 7800gtx is much cheaper currently (and available)

Go for the 7800gtx

What games do you play? If a lot of Doom3/Quake 4 (though Q4 only got 70% from PCGamer = ouch) then nVidia all the way. If source games then ATi, and if anything else, its pretty even. Personally, I don't see the point in getting a high end card to sli in the future. If you want to sli now, then the high end card is a fine choice but high end cards don't drop in price until well after next gen stuff has greatly inmproved performance, thus making the purchase of a high end last-gen card kinda stupid. Case in point, what does a 6800Ultra cost now? 400ish? and you can get a 7800GTX for that price.

I like to play Doom3, Unreal, Halo and Halflife. Some of the venders are offering BF2 with the purchase of the 7800GTX. I know that these cards are high-end and that as time goes on the price will change. This is also why I would like to get one high-end card and not run SLI. I will more the two 6600GT to another system. I just upgrade the processor again today. I change my 2x 3800 for the 2x 4400. I would like one more upgrade and that is a good video card to complete my game rig. What do you think?

You can get GTX today.

You can get XT... umm, sorry, my crystal ball is broken.

What you can count on, though, is that regardless of when the XT is readily available, it will be more expensive than a GTX.

If you really want to wait, you might as well wait for whatever Nvidia produces after the GTX.

According to the performance figure, it's quite fair to have the XT price at least $50-$100 more over the GTX.

Yeah, but the GTX is out now, and the XT is expected to be $50-100 more than it is NOW. So, when the XT comes out, the XT will be MORE than $50-100 more than the GTX at that time, since the GTX will obviously become cheaper.

Good job! The 7800 GTX is a beast, you will not regret it. Plus, you can say that your video card at one point was top of the line at one point.

Of course it does. And this is coming from the mouth of a 7800GTX owner. In the case of a guy that doesn't upgrade every generation and wants to buy a card now I think that he should wait for x1800xt. But ask yourself... Would you be wiling to spend 500+ on X1800XT in 1 month approximately to have it for like 4-5 months b4 ATI or Nvidia release their next beasts, which always by the speculating data will be far superior in performance and features ? 😀 😉
I mean I purchased my GTX 3 months ago and it will make a USEFUL PRODUCT CYCLE until spring.(assuming always that you're a high end gamer and you purchase a high end card every generation). X1800XT always speculating won't even last for 5-6 months...
