7800GTX 512 and Issues w/ BF2

Just upgraded from a x800xl to a 7800GTX 512. When playing Battlefield 2, I get some strange problems.

1. Shimmering - I heard that Nvidia cards had this issue more than ATI, are there any settings that will help with problem?

2. Color Spectrum(the only way I know to call it) - the side of walls, flags, flag polls, railings will look like a kaledoscope of colors. Really weird and it happens randomly

3. Complete Screen Artifacting - this happens after playing for a while but the whole screen will artifact(again the only way to describe it). I can however turn on a ingame map and that will look fine but when I got back to the game screen it's all artifacted and on occasion turns back to normal but then goes back to a completely artifacted screen.

I am using the Nvidia 82.12 Forceware Drivers(already tried 81.98). I've done a complete reinstall. I haven't overclocked at all. Initially, all I did was set all of the Battlefield 2 Video settings to High. Using guides on BF2 and Nvidia Drivers from tweakguides, I've played around w/ the BF2 settings and NV Settings w/ no luck.

NV settings:
Image Settings - High Quality
AA/AF Application Controlled(4x/16x)
V-Sync/Triple Buffering set to On
Gamma Control/Transparent Aliasing set to On
Everything else default

Tonight, while playing this occured during a round and disappeared after the next map loaded.

Is there something wrong w/ my card? Might have to go back to ATI, never had any issues like this.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

what are your temps on the card... as that would probably be the cause of the artifacting... when you go into the nvidia control panel play around with the color correction settings, as that oculd be a cause for the colors to be all funky... otherwise i'm not sure..

My temps hit 53c at load. I'm not overclocking and I've got major ventilation going thru my case. It's weird.

Wreckage - I'll try the newer drivers. Thx

Yes the GTX shimmers in BF2. But you have already done what helps out, setting the drivers to HQ. Try setting LOD Bias to clamp, see if that helps. There is no way to get rid of it all together, at least none that I have found.

Your frames are so low because you have vsync/TB on. TB doesnt work with DX games, sadly.

I dont know about your other issues, I dont have them with my GTX. Perhaps try the newer (beta) drivers, like others suggested.

Thanks Everyone. I'll play around w/ stuff and see if I can fix things. One thing I did do was set all of the in game settings to medium and that appeared to fix things. But I wouldn't have bought the card if all I wanted was medium settings.

Okay, outside of asking you folks. I didn't realize that BF2 is a DX game. How does one know if a game is more OpenGL or DX? I know I had to install DX 9c when installing the game but are games one or the other? Or do some use both OpenGL or DX? Pardon my ignorance.

Most games are written for one or the other; it's a choice that is up to the developer. Games that use DirectX will usually have DirectX listed in the system requirements. If a Windows game doesn't say, it *probably* uses DirectX. Only a handful of Windows games are using OpenGL right now (Doom3/Quake4 probably being the biggest).

The Unreal Engine, at least at times, has supported using either one (but not both at once).

Whatever happened to that API that was supposedly a cross between DX and OpenGL? Of course, I heard about that like 6 years ago. :)

There have been a few attempts at making even *more* generic 3D rendering APIs (basically, something cross-platform that could sit on top of either DirectX, OpenGL, or future rendering schemes). None have really been successful.

3DFX did have GLide, for a while, but that was basically OpenGL tweaked with special APIs to run faster on their hardware.

Matthias99 - Thanks for the explanation. I know somethings video graphics, I'm still a noob.

Ackmed - LOD Bias to Clamp, appears to have fixed a number of my issues. Thanks!

But, playing this morning, I felt like I was time-warped back to the 70s. Can you see Magic APC? What the heck is this?

Magic APC1
Magic APC2
Magic APC3
Magic Fences?

Make sure to use Driver Cleaner to wipe the old ATi drivers clean. Could always reinstall windows if it's not a big issue for you. If neither of these work, probably a hardware problem.

I had a 7800GTX 256MB with that same problem with the kaledoscope and full screen articfacting.

The kaledoscope thing is a driver problem. Some drivers have that problem and some don't. Fool around with different drivers i remember some old 8x.xx beta drivers fixing it.

The other problem is a bad memory problem (according to evga) so I sent in my card for an RMA, but then I did a step-up so I don't know if that fixed it, but I assume it would have.

Did you try changing the AA/AF settings in game? or mess with any video options when playing. I enabled 4xaa once and it did that except the ground turned blue.

Thanks for the suggestions folks! Looksl like I may have resolved the kaledoscope thingie by changing the Transparency Antialiasing setting to supersampling. I haven't had the issue since but I still get a number of other things. I'll keep playing around before deciding to RMA'ing it.
