7800GT

I was planning on ordering a 7800GT soon. I had a question about the drivers. I had heard that before hooking it up to your comp and installing the drivers, you should go to add/remove programs and delete your old drivers. Currently i had a Raedeon Xpress 200 gpu..(sucks i know). When deleting the driver from add/remove programs, are they talking about "ATI display driver"? Also, could i uninstall all the other ATI stuff(such as Catalyst Control Center and ATI Control Panel), or should i leave that there?

Finally, would a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104934 be enough to power this new card?

NO

It's better to use the Catalyst Uninstaller. I'll give you a link in a sec..

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27">https://support.ati.com/ics/support/......tID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27</a>

Click on the Utilities link, then on Various, then on ATI Maintenance. Also try the ATI SMART GART Uninstaller in there. I wasn't aware they had one, but since your switching brands, might as well.

Now for the power supply, should be good enough, I'm not familiar with the brand, but 500W, if the brand is good, is a lot of POWA!

I have an eMachine T6524 with a 250w PSU, and it runs the 7800 GT fine. Don't worry about upgrading the psu. Just uninstall the ATI drivers, and install Nvidia's.

The mobo will auto-detect the PCIe video card and auto-disable the integrated ATI junk.

You will need a power extension cable like THIS as there is only one free 4pin molex power connector and no PCIe power connector.

Yeah, it doesn't matter how much power you have, but how efficient it is. That's why brand is very important in a PSU.

Also, get the retail 7800 GT, as it will come with a dual 4pin power to PCIe power adaptor, and you'll need it.

the T6524 does NOT have a 250 watt psu. it has a 300 watt. just in case you want to argue i looked it up at emachines.com under the parts section but it want allow me to link to it. emachines puts a 300 watt psu in even the sempron machines. they stopped using the 250 watt psu over a year ago. you are also giving bad advice as 300 watts is low but more importantly it has very low amps on the 12v rail. just because you are wreckless doesnt mean others should be.

I was told 250w. Nevertheless, from what I hear the mobo is limited to what PSU's it is compatible with. Wreckless is spending $90 on a PSU for a prebuilt that may not work, or may cause damage to hardware.

so you put a 7800gt in your computer and didnt even LOOK at your psu? i guess you are a gambling man.

I went by what I have read online. So what if I mistook the psu for a 250 or 300w. The piont is it works, and well. I also have a 7800 GTX in a Dell with a 375w PSU, works great as well.

that doesnt sound any better. you put a 7800gt in computer knowing, or in your case thinking it had a 250watt psu. thats not very bright at all. i guess we should all just stop using quality power supplies because yours works so far. please dont give others that advice.

Funny, AT put all kinds of video cards in this HP with a 250w power supply. Text

Limited to what PSU's its compatible with? What does that mean? I thought all Mobo's and PSU's were either 20 or 24 pin. I looked and the mobo in my comp is a 24 pin, but im getting a 24 pin PSU with a 20 pin adapter just in case. What other compatability issues would there be?

Well, I saw this... Text.

My friend has the eMachines T6520, AMD A64 3400+ S754, 1GB PC3200, 250GB IDE, integrated video and sound. We got a 450 Fortron PSU to power the 7800GT, but the computer would never turn on with that PSU hooked up. Friend called eMachines tech support, and turns out that mobo WONT work with any PSU over 350W.

Sounds odd to me, but who knows. Prebuilt systems can be tricky with OTC hardware sometimes.

id say next time, you better know what youre getting b4 you buy some prebuilt system. They've got tons of tricks up their sleeves to make you believe its "worth it" at the time.
