I built a friend a shuttle box with a eVGA 7800GT CO (the one with copper cooler), and he is has to play games with the case door open or else it would overheat. Either way, it hurts to touch the card after an hour gaming on it.

Bah if you have a regular case you are fine....mine idles at about 42/43C and loads around 62/63.....which is awesome compared to what my old 6800GT would do...54 idle and 77/78 load

And get the 7800GT it's worth the extra cash and it'll probably last you as long as that old GTS2 ;)

If you can deal with 1280x1024 or even 1024x768 resolution, get the x800. For 1600x1200 I would not be able to deal with the 20fps on the x800. The 7800GT will deal with that resolution beautifully.

Rollo will obviously reccomend the 7800GT; he's a serious gamer and likes high FPS. He would consider the x800 obsolete tech unable to provide him with the level of gaming he requires.

Ummmm... not sure if you were being sarcastic about that part, but he will obviously recommend the 7800gt for various other reasons. ;)

I don't know what I'd say beyond this- the X800 is a good low end card, the 7800GT is the bang for buck winner on the high end (by far)- you'll just have to pick what you want to spend.

Personally, I'd want to use that 16X12 capability, but if you like 10X12, it's definitely cheaper to render.

yea i think i'm gonna go with the gt. thanks guys. i just don't want to have to deal with the loud fan on the x800+the rebate+the (stupid me just realized) cheap $120 model only has ddr1.

and nvidia did something special with the geforce 2 gts. it lasted me a solide 4-5 years...i doubt a 7800gt could touch that ;) even though i'm hoping at least 1 year with aa/af in almost every game.

good decision. the X800's all have gddr3 btw, for some reason they wrongfully put ddr1 on the packages and websites.

That's excellent advice, and I agree.

Spending $300+ to play at 1280 or below really isn't a good buy. 16x12+ the advantages of the newer cards really start to show.

Buying a high-end card to game at low(er) resolution is like buying a 12 bedroom house for a single person.

First x800
if you click on the picture the box only shows "ddr" not "gddr3" like every other x800...it explains why all other x800s are significantly more expansive than this particular one.

the box is wrong. rivatuner detects ddr3 for my X800, when the box and newegg said ddr1.

and half the speed of a 7800gt in quake 4.

why are people coming up w/ these crazy suggestions?

While the 7800GT is generally a better performer than a X850XT PE (or lessor cards), iF you could get a Sapphire X800GTO2 for ~$200 (which would essentially be able to run at X850XT PE speeds), it would be a BARGIN over any 7800GT costing >$290.00. However, the Sapphire GTO2 seems to be WAY over priced these days at ~$265.00.

With today's pricing, the best bargin does seem to be the 7800GTs provided the cost is >$300.00.

Once the supply/pricing of the X1000 series settles down, the best "bang for the buck" could change over the next month or so.
