LOL

I'm not trying to get too crazy with it. I've had good success on air cooling lately anyways.

Knowing me, I'd fry my comp with a waterblock ;)

Can anyone please confirm this???

Jiffy??

I don't have a rev. 2, but I have used a rev. 1 and a rev. 3, and the rev. 3 actually has two power plugs on it. I assume that they added the 3 prong power plug to the rev. 3 since that is what my GTX has, while my 6800GT just had a 2 prong plug. From the pics that I've seen, it appears that the 7800GT uses a 2 prong plug, so a rev. 2 should work.

edit: didn't see the second page...

No you cant use revision 2, you have to use revision 3. As far as lowering case temps go, I'm not sure because it was never an issue. I imagine it may have helped a tad but I already have 2 120 mm and 1 90 mm case fans, and I'm also running a venus 12 on the cpu.

You can use a Rev2. The only difference is that the Rev3 has RAM heatspreaders for the back, and that is on the GTX card only. the 7800GT would not even use the spreaders that come with the Rev3, as there is no memory on the back of the 7800GT. The Rev2 card should work fine.

Why don't you wait and see if you need it first? I have recent eVGA 7800GT (515 model), and it goes 500/1200 easily (not tried higher), with temps that only hit like 65C if I run some stress test on it.

I'm confused, why repeat the exact same thing someone posted above?

Well I have both a Rev 2 & a Rev 3 NV Silencer and both work on a PNY 7800GT (am running with both now in SLI). So yes, you can use Rev 2 and it cools exactly the same as the Rev 3 does on 7800GT's. Don't have a GTX so can't say if it'd work on a GTX.

Woah... Awesome clocks man.

It's gonna a be Christmas present anyways, so I'm gonna get a HSF for the GPU no matter what, I'm just making sure to get the right one. ;)

So I see there are eight votes for the VF700... no one wants to chime in on behalf of the Zalman?

That is a good thing you know. My GTX was hitting 82c with stock and now never sees 60c with the nvsilencer. It's a piece of mind kinda thing

Did the silencer help case temps at all? CPU temp? Northbridge?

On a DFI Lanparty, you dont want the stock cooler blow its hot air at that wimpy NB fan, so yes, it did help in my case a great deal. Before using the NV silencer 5, I even moved my 7800GT to the second slot to avoid my NB being fried - or the fan on the NB cooler start to scream like a jet engine. Another solution would be a passive cooler for the NB..

I actually switched to the Zalman after using the Silencer and it did cool the GPU core slightly better . . . the key with the Zalman is that you need to set up a way to get that hot GPU air out of your system by either using a slot cooling fan or some other method . . .

I tried using a Rev. 3 and it borked my computer. Blue screens and slow downs galore. I swapped it back out to the stock cooler in about 60 seconds. Not even enough time to get the temperatures on the card. I put the stock cooler back in and everything was back to normal. Now I'm scared to try it again. I also could NOT get the stupid back plate RAM coolers to stay in place. They had the adhesive qualities of massage oil.

ThermalRight has a redesigned V-1 cooler for the 7800GTX coming out soon. Looks like that's going to be my cooler of choice.

One thing I will say is that the NV5 Silencer is it is quieter. I'm not impressed with the quietness of the VF700. I bought mine from a forum member who already installed it. He got some great OC's, 526/1.2 IIRC. Just playing around yesterday, I can get 520/1.1-1.15 before ATI Tool shows artifacts. But load temps hits 76C while running RTHIBL(?), which is unnerving and disappointing.

I'm not sure if I want to keep the VF700 & put in a slot cooler, or get the NV5 Silencer....

The GTX needs the Silencer Rev. 3 because of the fan connector (more than 2 pins).
I am building a rig for a friend (got a GT for him) and can confirm the GT doesn't need the revision 3. But the GTX does

I bought one for myself (Rev. 3 for a GTX) but have yet to install.

Reasons to install Silencer:

1) Better GPU cooling
2) Push hot air outside the case
3) Improve cooling on NB (DFI).

Does anyone knows if the Rev. 3 fits on the GTX 512MB?

What's so confusing? I obviously didn't read the entire thread :p

Wow. Someone rekindled this thread just at the right time!

Do any of you guys know where I can get the NV Silencer 5 Rev.2 for cheap?

The cheapest I found was 24.95 at xpcgear.com using froogle.

??

Unless you go used, I think most of them have been sold out since they are discontinued. I just ended up grabbing a couple of rev 3's @ $29 from that newegg deal last week.
