Hi im running a pair of 7800gt's 440 core 1060 mem from evga in sli. Would it be a worthwile upgrade to go to a 7950 or twin 7900gt's i game on a 19" lcd at 1280x1024 right now the only thing struggling is oblivion. Also i run a dual core opty at 2.8ghz for cpu

doubt it. at your resolution, it doesn't matter that much. just turn down the graphics in Oblivion. you don't wanna lower the resolution. what manufacturer versoin cards do you have? if you have evga you can use their step-up program.

Yeah that sounds great... 30" LCD @ 5 FPS with 0AA/0AF... That's a whole lot of ugly to look at. Quality, not quantity my friend.

When you go SLI, I don't think you should upgrade for quite awhile (unless you are talking about low-end SLI).

by that logic you should not upgrade as long as you can play the gfame at your monitors native resolution.... like me... i won't upgrade mt rig below until i can't play the games i like on the 19" i am about to buy..

but most ppl don't do that.
OP 7900gt sli can play oblivion at 1280x1028 maxed out with bloom and AA (cuz a 7950gx2 can do that at 1600x1200 so 7900gt sli should be good for 1280x1028) yeah i think it'll be a significant improvement.

but x1900xt can be had for 330 at newegg so Xfire x1900xt should handle AA+HDR at 1280x1028 easily.

just tone down the settings in Oblivion slightly.
Moving Up from 7800GT SLI is strictly not worth the money...and I'm a little shocked to hear a Dual-Core Opteron @ 2.8GHz paired with 7800GT SLI can't handle Oblivion at a measly 1280x1024!!!! I haven't played this game but you are scaring me!

Maybe you should take a look at that .ini file-hack that surfaced a while ago for improving Oblivion performance. I'm still scratching my head over this one!

the system is great until you get into some foilage areas on the game and the frame rate goes to hell really quick if you have HDR enabled. Since i currently have a very exspensive SLI board im not really interested in Crossfire, plus ive had alot of trouble with ATI drivers in the past. while i will agree they got some great hardware nowdays

forgot to mention last time. look at anands oblivion benches. a single x1900xt is enough at 1280x1028. i think the min fps was 38 (in foliage and near oblivion gate) and max was 56. but min is what count. i think the fact the you have sli and effective 256 mb vram is what pushing it. on my x800gt at 1280x1028 with large textures and grass i almost always have 1 mb free vram so its quite likely your being held back vram.

Are you making fun of me because I don't use AA or AF (and have never seen a need to either)? HMMM???

Just kidding.

To the OP, I would recommend just waiting for Dx10 cards to come out. I'm pretty sure your 7800gts can hold out pretty well until then.

Just curious, how much RAM do you have?
