7800GT showing artifacts sometimes.

Was playing Republic Commando and some artifacts showed, different colored slim triangles poping in really fast, not all the time, but every 2-5 seconds. Weird. Checked temps and I've seen em go just under 70C. Played a bit after checking temps and didn't notice any more artifacts. Anyone else experience this crap.

Ok, I don't understand why people make posts about artifacts or other errors and then not tell us whether the card is overclocked or not. Sorry to be cranky but I see this so often.

Sorry, it isn't overclocked.

Well... it's factory overclocked from Leadtek with an extra 50/25.

Many users with 7800 gt's were having artifacts, as for me I ahd an evga one and i was able to fix it with a bios update which was recommended by EVGA. What I'd do is check your vendor page for a bios update and flash it.

My GTX was havin probs like that...

I fixed it by mounting an Athlon 64 fan on the heatsink, and then a Vantec Tornado 92mm blowing on that for the 490/1300.

Ima try that bios update.

Where do I find this bios update for the GTX (If there is one). I dont see anything about bios on the eVGA site.

Hmm, maybe these factory overclocks are not as stable as we've been led to believe. You could always try underclocking it and see if that causes the artifacts to go away.

ive been concerned about this exact thing. im getting ready to buy a new card but this is making me rethink my 7800gt choice.

am i the only one who thinks if you pay 400 for a video card, it should have great image quality and be very fast out of the box, without any bios flash bull and hassle. i mean is the 7800gt really that much faster than a x850xt that its worth the added aggravation.

I really don't think the X850XT would be a wise purchase for you at this time either with the new ATI cards coming soon. If you're really someone who values great image quality, the ATI R520 cards are right up your alley.

Rumored MSRP for the X1800XL is $449. Street price should be $400 or less. Naysayers here will tell you that availability will be bad and street prices will be above MSRP, blah blah. Don't listen to them. Give it a couple weeks and see for yourself.

That could void my warranty so I don't want to try. Plus, I paid for this Extreme edition.

yeah... ive been thinking of waiting for the r520, but... any idea on price? probably more than the 7800gtx huh?
They don't even have a card within the 300-400 dollar range. Actually, they High mid-range and the low High-range are 200 dollars appart, which is pathetic to me.

can a power supply cause artifacts. I fiddled with the PSU connections and it seemed to have less artifacts.

Doesn't sound right to me 😕 if it's that, or the card isn't getting any airflow 🙁

If the leadtek card is anything like the eVGA card, then that means they not only overclocked it, but threw in a Geometric clock delta of about 40MHz. This caused my 7800GT to artifact like crazy. The bios update mentioned before removed the geometric delta but kept the overclock at 445MHz and fixed my issues. This is supposedly how BFG has their cards set and there's been no problems there.

So far I've had no problems with mine.

How long is Leadtek's warranty? Couldn't find it.

Leadtek told me to check the card on a different computer to see if my mobo is F'd up, but I have no other computer so... They said if I still think it's the card to send it back to where I bought it for testing.

Leadtek's response to query of warranty:

"The local warranty for our released every item was defined and noticed by local dealer (not by us). So if you don't know the exact definition of the warranty info about we released item, please try to contact with our local dealer."

Zipzoomfly.com, where I ordered the card from said 3 years manufacturer warranty.

The EVGA web-site has a couple of different BIOS out for their 7800GT. Apparently, at least some are having good luck with BIOS updates. I didn't care to try and mess with the BIOS so I RMA'd my 7800GT back to EVGA. FedEx just picked it up. Hopefully, I'll get the new card by the end of next week.
