From prior experiences (I've never payed attention to price changes in the past, so I'm not sure), does anyone think that the 7800GT will drop significantly in 4 months from now? I ask because I'm thinking about getting a 6800GS to replace my 6600GT and then maybe using EVGA's step-up thing to upgrade to the 7800GT at little cost 3 months later. Does this sound reasonable or no?

Shouldn't drop too much. However i would wait until Black Friday (Friday after Thanksgiving) as they normally have INCREDIBLE deals on things like that.

I never thought of that after Thanksgiving... do the online sellers usually have big discounts?

IMO...Black Friday has been a MAJOR disappointment with respect to video cards for the last 3 years. I think the last really good deal was the BFG GeForce3 TI200 for $99 (after 2 $50 MIRs) at Best Buy (I believe it was 2002).

Looks like CrapUSA's going to have a X800XL for $199 after MIRs. Best price to-date for this card, but at this point...I wouldn't settle for anything less than a 7800GT.

I think the on-line stores will have some really good deals on video cards over the next month though...so hold on and watch this forum closely;)

IMO...EVGA's step-up program doesn't look very tempting due to their relatively high prices at their website.

If you have a mobo that is already PCI-e, do as these gents are saying. But if you don't the deal at NewEgg for the 7800GT and mobo for $349 is pretty darn good.

What was the best deal last year? Wasn't it a PNy 6800nu for $200 at CompUSA? At that time they were normally going for $230-260 new from online e-tailers, so I guess it was a good deal at the time.

This year...maybe we'll see a 7800 GT for $250 but I can't see B&M retailers actually doing that since their video cards are normally dramatically overpriced. Maybe they'd come down off their high horses and offer one for $300, probably AR. I can see the x800xl's and 6800 GT's going on sale as they try to clear them out. Maybe we'll see some x800xt and x850xt's too.

You're right. There was a $100 instant savings on all flavors of 6800s at CompUSA last year, I believe. It was right when they started shipping, so it was an absolutely awesome deal for those who were able to get one. :)
