7800GT Overheating?

I just got my new system with a 7800 GT CO installed. Yesterday I was playing Half-Life 2 when I got a BSOD saying the file nv4_disp.dll was the problem and it was beginning a memory dump. So, I tried playing HL2 again, this time keeping an eye on the GPU temp. It was getting to about 70C. Since I am havent been into graphics cards for a while, is this too high or what may have caused the problem? Also, I've noticed people complain that their fan gets very loud - I can barely hear mine with the case cover off and I don't hear a change in fan speed when starting a graphics intensive app like HL2. Anyone's thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

70°C is fine, if you believe the nvidia driver, that sets an (default) alarm at 115°C or something like that. I read that the driver cheats a little with the temp reading and that rivatuner is more accurate. However, my 7800GT can also get close to 70°C without any crashes or artifacts.

But, if your card has the 7800GT reference cooler, and you can hardly hear it at full speed, then maybe you need to have your ears checked. ;)

So if it's not the temp that caused the BSOD, what else could it be?

Sorry, I'm new to these graphics cards - what is the "7800GT reference cooler"? Also, my ears are completely fine. With my ear right next to the card, I can hear no difference in fan speed when starting up HL2.
