7800GT or 6600GT SLI

Could someone with either of these options please bench AoE3 Demo with everything maxed out at 1280x1024. I need to upgrade my 6600GT. Would rather get a 7800, but they are $700 atm in Australia, and another Leadtek 6600GT extreme will be $275.
Thanks in Advance :p

2 6600GT is about the same as 1 6800GT. So one 7800GT would blow it out of the water.

My advice: Wait to upgrade. Your 6600GT is perfectly fine right now.

7800GT, but for now lower the settings...until 7800GT becomes more affordable for you.

obviously the 7800gt for future upgradeability aka SLI ;) .. and also that fact that it will perform better and has the next gen hardware ..

EDIT: sorry just skimmed, didn?t realise that you already had a 6600GT  .. anyways still get the 7800gt :p .. theres nothing like opening up a box with some brand new hardware in it .. :D

While this is not even close to true, the 7800GT is faster and a better overall solution.

I know it's not actually 2x as fast, but dual 6600GT bench around 1 6800GT, and 1 6800GT gets beaten by a 7800GT, so it seems pretty obvious to me, that's all.

6600GT in SLi is like throwing a pair of old Duron 800MHz chips in a brand spanking new $550 server board. It can be done, but is an astonishingly stupid thing to do.

7800GT all the way.

Why are you wishing to upgrade already though?, I have 6600GT and with 1280*1024 max res, what is the point of the 7800GT?

the 7800GT is coming down in price fast. if ATI's products are competitive we might see a further drop in price. the lowest I've seen so far is $360.

This isn't true either, the 7800GT would fall somewhere between one and two 6800GTs IMO. (although I only have 6800GT SLI and 7800GTX SLI for comparison)

I do know that up to 16X12 4X8X 6800GT SLI comes in at around 7800GTX SLI performance, and in some cases like Doom3 the 6800GTs win.

Which is not meant to diss the 7800GT, I'd just say 7800GTX is a closer match to 6800GT SLI.

If you have a monitor that support 1600*1200+, go for it with the 7800 series, otherwise you are throwing money away

Thanks for all the replies. I realise the relative strength of the 2 solutions, But if you saw the price^^, it would want to be great for me to buy the 7800 and sell my current card. I'd be looking at an exchange of $500 or so, whereas buying one more 6600GT is $275 or so. Perhaps the best bet for me would be wait for a new midrange 7 series or see what ATI can come up with in the next few months. Meanwhile I'll play with some shading on low etc.

I would still love to see some SLI benches and 7 series benches of this game on max at 12x10, thanks all.

P.S The BFG 7800GT OC can be had in the U.S for about $480 AUS. WTF, So much for the supposed free trade agreement we have with you guys. Can't believe they actually have the hide to sell us hardware at these prices. But that is for P+N I guess ;)

if you look at some benchies, the 6600GT in SLI can handle reasonably well against 7800GT until you get to resolutions higher than 1600x1200 or run AA/AF

I'd say: if you can run 1600x1200 or need to run higher quality settings right now, get another 6600GT since you already have one. If you don't need to, you should wait until newer games come out and for the prices of the 7800 or 6600GT to go down a bit more.

which is fair, we are however talking about 6600GT's, not 6800GT's. :D

X-bit labs in their recent round up of video cards included the 6600GT in SLI and the 7800GT. They didn't use the AoE3 demo, but they used quite a few other games; so, I think you should be able to get a general idea of what to expect.

I live on the Gold Coast. Perth rox, I almost took a job down at Port Bouvard ( what a beautiful part of the planet that is).

Guys, I understand the relative strength of the 2 solutions. I have the cash, but I still hate ripping myself off. I don't care about other games. I'm a hardcore AoM player.I will be a hardcore AoE3 player. I don't play FPS or MMORPGs so I really just need a solution to play this one game at the settings I want, which is maxed out.

So if anyone who has 6600GT in SLI or 7800GT, and has the demo, please bench at 12x10 and max settings. With 4xAA 16xAF enabled. I get 20 FPS in a large battle at those settings.

AMD 3500+,2GB value DDR400 RAM,Seagate ncq HDD 120Gig, Leadtek 6600GT extreme edition.

Cheers.

Edit...

I built this comp, to play AoE3. Also it allows me to play AoM maxed out with room to spare. So this is not your standard which card is better thread. Think of it as which solution is adequate. TY.

Ooops, my bad. I do have a 6600GT SLI set as well. I meant to say I've only compared 6600GTs and 7800GTXs.
