I do not have an HD cable that came with the card since I purchased the card and computer from another owner. Which HD cable should I get if I plan on hooking it up to my HDTV? Would I need an adapter before going to the HD cable? Recommended brands?

This is for an EVGA 7800GT.

Does your HDTV have DVI or HDMI in? If it has DVI then you just need a DVI cable. DVI-HDMI cables are also available. Im guessing the HD cable you are talking about is the component output from your video card? Adapters can be purchased on the fourms here, nvidia's webite(?) or ebay for cheap.

It's a new Sony 60" Wega HDTV. So I believe it offers a 2 HDMI. I also want the surround sound.

i dont think 7800GT's can do audio through dvi-hdmi. only video i think...but video will work fine no problem.

soundwise, you need to plug in cables from your soundcard to the tv. thats the only way unless you have a different source other than the computer.

The 7800GT has 2 DVI-I ports so that would enable me to get a converter to HDMI. I could then get the component HD cables and plug them into the TV, I think.

Dont most cards come with a breakout box with component cables on them? (my ASUS 7800GT did anyway).

You can connect any normal rca style connector to the component outs and just plug them straight into your tv, then get a minijack to phono (or a spdif if your tv and soundcard support it) to get sound.

HDMI would give you better picture quality, but it would be awkward to get sound (as the 7800 would only be outputting video), i dont beleive you could receive video over HDMI and audio over phono at the same time, so component may be your only option.

Does monoprice make good cables? I could just get Radio Shacks? Are they of good quality?

Isn't that cable a HDMI DVI-D cable, whereas the 7800GT supports the DVI-I? Do they work interchangeably?

DVI-D male with connect with DVI-I female correct? But not vice-versa?

Viddy cards preferably sport DVI-I just so the connector can be used with a VGA adapter for analog. So, a DVD-D cable is all you need for a digital connection and that monoprice one looks correct.

As for surround sound, an S/PDIF output from the PC in either optical or electrical variety is preferred. For the latter, any standard 75ohm coaxial RCA plug cable will do (composite video aka 1/3 component video aka digital audio). If the PC's output is via a 3.5mm mini-jack and a suitable adapter cable with aforementioned spec cannot be found then a seperate adapter like this can be used.

If you also want surround sound for games (and in lieu of real-time AC3/DTS encoding), then three of those cables shown in the trianglecables link will do, at least until HDMI audio output is available.

Should I just stay with the 3.5MM mini stereo component cable that I suggested previously?
