Go to NGOHq and check the farcry benchmark there.

At 1280x1024 and 8AA/16AF the 7800GT gets 39fps and this is running the HardwareOC Farcry Training map at Ultra quality.

Now I ran those EXACT settings with my X850XT and I get 65fps. Am I missing something?

Um, I don't think the X850XT supports 8xAA. If it does, then it must not be setting properly, because there's no way you'd get 65fpw with 8xAA on.

Test out the exact same benchmark using 4xAA and no AA, and then post back the results. My guess is that when you set 8xAA (where are you doing this btw? in game?) it's either turning AA off or setting it to 4x.

I did those settings in the HardwareOC benchmark program.
I set it to 4AA/8AF this time and I get like 67fps whereas the 7800GT gets 69.

I've benched a X850XT PE and a BFG 7800GTX (460/1300) and they were within a few frames in FarCry @ 1600x1200 4AA/8AF.

Try testing at 2048x1756 4AA/8AF and see what you get . . . :D

Try seeing what percentage of users have a display that runs 2048x1756 and see what you get....:) With graphics cards being released so fast, it meens little to nothing to only be faster in useless resolutions for 95% of the market. Yes I know the arguement is that the 7800gt will scale better in next-gen titles, but I also think so will the 8800gt that will be available when said next generation titles really can't be run well of the x850XT PE.

The 7800GTX scales a lot better at higher resolutions than the last gen hardware but at 1600x1200 and below the X850XT PE is dang near its equal in FarCry (at least in my testing).

thanx for the replies. Good to know cause my LCD is native 1280x1024. I was thinking of going for a 7800GT but I see there's not really much of a point in doing that right now.

Agreed. For 1024x1024 and lower, the last-gen cards will do just fine. I need to get a next-gen card because I of my LCD. :(

Yup that's within the margin for error (65fps with 8x AA and 67fps with 4x AA).

8x is defaulting to 4x AA on your card. The 8x AA performance on the 7800GT is merely academic. Pretty much nobody would run it at that setting for 39fps.

Re: Far Cry - the X850XT is a Far Cry beast. It easily handles FC @ 1600X1200, even with AA. Try a little overclocking and it gets even better ;) .
