7800GT and Monitor

Thinking about upgrading a lil bit from my old system.

Monitor- SyncMaster 174v (already owned) max res 1280x1024
Mobo- Chaintech VNF4 939 Ultra
PSU- Thermaltake silent Purepower 480W
RAM-Corsair valueselect 2G (2x 1GB)
CPU- A64 3700+ San Diego.

Ok so when it comes to the GPU, i'm debating on whether to get a 7800GT. I dont really want to get an X800GTO^2 because i'm not really an OC'r (hence the mobo). Now alot of people have said 'OMGWTFHAX WHY U GETTIN 7800GT WITH TAHT MONITER, IZ ONLY 1280X1024 BBQ!!?!?!'. Well, i run games at 1024x768 (until my 6600GT crapped out) and now i'm thinking of getting the 7800GT so i can run them at 1280x1024.

I know it's a bad term to use (and please, keep the 'there's no such thing' comment out), but if i only want to run games at those settings, would a 7800GT be *somewhat* of a future proof method for me? Again, well aware there's no real way to future proof...but this would last me a bit since i don't max the hell out of my settings...usually keep AA/AF very low/not at all...

just wondering what you guys have to say on this monitor matter. thanks.

If you are happy with your monitor and resolution, then a 7800GT would be fine. It would be a nice match for your 3700 and 2 gig of ram.

1280 x 1024 w/7800gt means you can turn more eyecandy on than at a better res.

I say go for it.

I think it will be fine, but to state future proof it's not. Games like FEAR have already shown us that these cards will sweat playing with eye candy at max. As for 1280x resolution, you should be fine and very happy. I play at 1600 with min settings and it's awesome.

The future lies in uncertainty and always will. Highly mathematically throughput , DX10, and Physics & collision detection games are on the horizon. Today's graphic cards like the 7800GT are not made for tomorrows features even though they market them that they do.
