7800GT a good upgrade

these specs seem pretty secure now and the result is exactly:
> double the fillrate
> double the bandwidth
> double the memory
over my month old 6600GT which i paid about £120 for.

question is; shortly into the new year i would like to get an X2 dual-core, and would hope to pick up a 7800GT for no more than £240, is this a reasonable expectation?

i would rather not spend more than £240 given that it will mean my £120 6600GT will have had a 6 month lifespan.

Its too early to tell, since the 7800GT hasn't even been officially launched yet, let alone made it into retail channels. I am uncertain what the pricing would be in pounds, but I would expect around 250-300 USD. A '7600' part will likely fill a 150-200 USD price point. But its all speculation.

you got to love the dollar/sterling price parity, whereby we pay twice as much for the same thing. 🙁

$399 is about 228Pounds but prices in the UK might be higher. the GT should deliver about double the performance of your 6600GT making it a good upgrade.
From a performance/price point of view its going to be a great card!

Sounds like it would even be a good upgrade from a 6800GT.

hmm, this is what i was referring to with the dollar/sterling price parity problem.

even though $399 does have the same value as £228, british prices are so inflated we are likely to pay around £300 on arrival which would equate to nearly $500.

this is why i would rather wait until Q1 06 when the price will be around £240 hopefully.

two factors in my favour are that the 7800GT will be a native PCI-E chip and widely available, therefore there should be more reasonable pricing.

It can't be just a 200% increase. That's card's already out, and it's known as the 6800GT. 😉

I think this will be a big boost over the 6800GT card hopefully. Maybe it'll be able to keep pace with the Ultra due to the new pipelines.

6600GT - 8x 500MHz = 4000MP
6800GT - 16x 350MHz = 5600MP
6800U - 16x 400MHz = 6400MP
7800GT - 20x 400MHz = 8000MP
7800GTX - 24x 430MHz = 10320MP

.'. 7800GT = double the fillrate of the 6600GT
