7800gt 512mb version

Gainward also reached into the power mainstream market and made a new card based on Geforce 6800 GS and again managed to solder 512MB of GDDR 3. It uses 256 bit 1.4 nanosecond memory on the red printed circuit board (PCB).

sounds nice, but might be overkill for a 12 pipe card...however a 512mb 7800gt would be a nice addition to the 7800gt lineup....but at what price???

what about stablity? is it designed to have 512mb ?

i think so

if you remove the HSF i think there are spaces left to solder more memory

i think the 6800U + were desgined to have a max of 512mb. i remember reading about when ATI tried to put 512 on their x850? or something, they had a hard time of it because it wasnt really designed to handle 512....their engineers worked round it though managing to drop the latency on the extra 256 mem to acceptable levels.

None of the videocards benefit much from 512mb of ram yet because most games don't use the extra 256mb yet. But eventually, the extra 256mb will be used.

...but by that time, the cards will be painfully slow compared to what is on the market. And what are you going to do with the memory? Super high-res textures or super-detailed models (to the point that it won't fit in 256MB of RAM) will bog down the GPU too much to be usable.

maybe, maybe not. I believe there are already a few games out there already taking advantage of having 512mb of ram.

7800GT should be okay for the next 5-10 month at least, unless you need ultra high framerate. Of course, I won't pay more than $30 for these extra 256mb.
