Is the 7800GS the last best hope for AGP? Or do you think companies will continue support considering the large support I've seen around the forums?

well, pretty soon, the agp video card will be worth more than the entire computer its going in, so there wouldnt be much point in getting one.

I'm not going to bother to upgrade the the 7800gs for my system. I want to try and hold on to this for the next year or year and a half yet and just sell the RAM, video card, processor, and mobo and get the new AMD chip and a directX 10 video card. I cant see spending too much on an upgrade now, as even the best now probably wont run the Unreal 3 engine very well.

I just have to be patient! I see the need to upgrade to PCI-e in the somewhat near future, but i'll hold onto what I have for as long as I can!

Supposedly eVGA is working on a 7800GS using their ECS3 cooling kit and if so it'll probably be a little faster than their current Superclocker version. But I'd say for all practical purposes the 7800GS series is the last of the new AGP cards. ATI and nVidia are looking beyond AGP now. People are going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade to PCIe if they want to keep up and play tomorrow's games. Obviously there'll be some AGP holdouts but they wont need PCIe for the most part for what they are doing with their PCs.

Mobos are of the cheaper components out of the whole system. I don't see a big deal at all...

Well, since you can get a FREE PCIe mobo with a 7800GT then I think it's time to upgrade ;)

Mobos may be the cheapest link now (depends on choice of mobo) but you have alot of work when upgrading them. Proc, RAM, bios updating, drivers, O/S reinstalling, etc., All these extras make it a major upgrade in my mind. Most people still prefer not to do this themselves and pay someone else to do it or just buy a new system to avoid the hassle.

I think the 7800GS is the last. ATi doesnt have to respond to this, if they lower the prices on X850XT AGP's to $225-250 or so people will buy it over the more expensive 7800GS.

If you've got an old northwood core, which is still a viable processor for newer games you're kind of screwed by the lack of motherboard availability with PCIE. And there's nothing if you're trying to save a decent socket A chip. But at least there's good AMD s754 options still.

I would expect the 7600 to make it to AGP- it is pin compatible with the 6600 so it is very easy to set up an AGP version with next to no work.

My bet (like 25% chance) is we see the X1800GTO in AGP from Sapphire to compete with the 7800GS.

It'll probably be the last. PCI-E is, as SpeedZealot said, the new standard. The 7800 GS could give AGP systems a couple more years of decent performance, but when it comes time to upgrade, a new mobo will be necessary for both the processor and video card, and PCI-E is there. I also heard that they're coming out with an even newer format. Is this a rumor or is there some truth behind it?

PCI Express 2 is supposedly in the works, but don't worry its fully reverse compatiable.
