7800 vs. 7900 series

I was thinking about moving up from 7800 to 7900, but when I was comparing the 7900GT to 7800GT, the difference was only a few FPS for all the games it tested.

Even when you compare 7900GTX to 7800GTX 512MB, you'll see that the difference is only a few FPS.

This proves that unless you absolutely need to win all benchmarks, it's pointless to upgrade from 7800 to 7900 just to gain a few FPS, unless you're moving from GT to GTX. A bit of a letdown really, but given the specs, I didn't expect too much.

Of course if you're buying a new one, it's better to go for the 7900 series.

I think I'll stick with my evga 7800GT CO SE which gives me near 7800GTX 256MB performance, and I'll need a OCed version of 7900GT to notice any difference.

If you need a fast card, X1900XT or X1900XTX is still the way to go, unless you're planning SLI.

What do you guys think?

for the current owners of 7800 series cards its not so great, for everyone else they are awesome. performance is better than 7800 and the price is cheaper, what else can you ask for? A 7900GT card @$299 outperforms $400-$500 7800GTXs. I'm sold.

That's why I said for new owners, a 7900GT is a better option.

For current 7800 users like me, I'd rather go SLI if I want improvements.

Ahhh, but when you have the bottom rung 7800 like me, going up to the Uber-L33t 7900 would seem like a good jump.

With 7800GT SLI offering slightly better performance over 7900GTX from the benchmarks, I'd rather get another 7800GT and SLI it.

Yeah It sucks though I hope the 7800GTX hits below 300 because I wouldn't want to pay $100 more then a comparable 7900GT just to SLI.

Maybe Nvidia can help me out and allow me to do a 7800GTX+7900GT SLI setup. I mean interms of everything the 7900GT is just a shrunk GTX with a slightly faster core speed.

There are some low level differences involving the way in which HDR mem access is handled- it isn't likely the different gens will 'play nice'.

seems very much to follow intel's old adage of new process or new architecture, but not both.

hopefully nvidia is spending their engineering budget on NV50/G80 or whatever it is.

if you take ocing into account, then the 7900 gt is a heck of a deal!

from the reviews i've seen, the gt seems to be able to oc to 550/1600+ with ease
that's pretty much a 7800 512 gtx without the extra 256mb of ram

benchmark shows that the oced gt is pretty close to the performance of a 512 gtx (sucks for 512 gtx owners)

It's awesome if you've got an eVGA card. I'm stepping up from a 7800 GT CO SE (460/1100 w/20 pipes stock) to a 7900 GT CO Superclocked (550/1580 w/24 pipes stock) for 30 dollars.

Im looking at their review and it doesnt compare the 7800gt and the 7900gt directly. Only in SLI?

This was the last day to step-up from my 7800gt to a 7900gt. Doesn't seem worth it for me. I paid $280 after rebate for the card, and the 7900gt is almost $100 more than that. Not worth it for me.

I would say for those who can step up, getting a much faster 550/1550+ overclocked 7900GT will certainly give benefits. For everyone else who had a 7800GT spending $300 to upgrade to 7900GT or even GTX is certainly a waste of $.

7800GT performance is reviewed on mid-range cards. I compared it with the 7900GT that was in high-end card section. (comparing results with the same res, settings obviously)

i tried doing that, but the res's and settings dont match up.
