7800 GTX worth the cost over a 7600 GT?

Hey all,

I'm upgrading my graphics card from a 128mb Gigabyte 6600GT PCI-E, and want to get the best bang for my buck. I've been looking around, and can find a 7600GT for around $136 AR) versus a 7800 GTX for $200.

If the 7800GTX blows the 7600GT out of the water, then I'll definitely fork over the extra cash, otherwise if it's only marginally better then I'll gladly save my money.

Any input would be great.

The 7800gtx is definitely in a different league than a 7600gt, and will be significantly faster.

A 7900 GT also consumes about only 60% of the energy of the 7800 GTX though.

And yes, 7800 GTX performance is in a different league then the 7600 GT.

7800GTX is essentially a 7900GT.

A 7800GTX is based on 110nm and 7900GT on 90nm.

Both are clocked the same, although the 7900GTs use 1.4ns ram while the 7800GTX use 1.6ns. Hence you can OC more on the 7900GT. It also produces less power due to the 90nm process AND having less transistors (278~ million compared to 302 million).

I would suggest the 7800GTX, because it has a better cooler, and you dont have to face any problems like the 7900GT cards. (This is due to a volt regulator problem or something).

And yes, a 7800GTX is ALOT faster than a 7600GT.

I'd say definitely get a 7800GTX if you can get one for ~$200. The 7900GT is a bit faster than a 7800GTX but the little speed boost probably isn't worth the extra $40 or 50. And they are not quite as stable due to some manufacturing or QC issues, especially on the highly clocked (i.e. XFX XXX and eVGA CO SC) models.

Performance will be a lot better than a 7600GT due to the 7800GTX having twice as many pixel pipelines

Go for a 7900GT, I was in the market for a new card, planned on getting a 7600GT, then almost boughta 7800GT but realized that the 7900GT blows them all out of the water, and on the for sale/trade forums you canget one for around 220 shipped! I did!
