7800 GT vs 8800 GTS

I know the 8800 will blow away the 7800 but right now its doing ok for me. I want to upgrade to a q6600 and putting this old card back into the machine is a step backwards.

Think its a good idea to wait for the next gen before replacing?

I've looked around for test comparisons but this card is too old I think.

heavy sigh Compared. You'll be hard-pressed to find a 320 version, and you won't find a deal on one. The 640 version is still plentiful. As long as you don't mind paying the premium price, and you want to play now, buy now...the next gen has reportedly slipped into next year.

Of course you say you are fine with the card now, so you should upgrade when you need it and based on the games you play.

If it's doing ok for you, then don't upgrade. Wait till the next gen cards come out, or till a game doesn't play well enough for your tastes.

I was in your exact boat couple days ago but then I decided that next gen cards will be awhile so I just upgraded to 2900 pro.

The thing is some games are already borderline slideshows on the 7800GT, and twice that speed isn't that impressive given how close we are to the next gen.

On higher resolutions, you may notice a much bigger difference which may accelerate your desire to upgrade, but on average according to THG the 8800GTSs are about 80% faster than the 7800GT (factoring in average of all resolutions from 1024x to 1900x over about a dozen applications and games).

next gen cards are suppose to hit around Q2 of 2008 or even later, which to me is a very long time. If you decide to upgrade now you will have at least 8 months of using your new card which is pretty good. Plus with Crysis around the corner, having a 8800 gts at least is a must to run the game well.

I guess I should ask, what games are you currently playing that doesn't allow you to run the game at settings you would like it to?

I was under the impression we would see the new G92 in mid Nov., has this changed?

well their mid range card the 8700gt is coming out in nov which is bwt the performances of 8600gts and the 8800 gts.

ok, I've now seen it called 8800 gt and 8700gt in the past 10 minutes. I've also read 8700 gts somewhere recently, too. damn you g92!!!

Haha, yea I was just reading the forums about the 8700gt or well 8800gt and got confused also. Oh I will try to overclock this SOB as much as I can. Gotta get the moneys worth Although a smarter decesion would be to wait for the 2950xt since its around the corner, but whatever. Oh yea, the card comes in on Thursday so I'll let you guys know how the OC goes.

I'm running the evga 8800 GTS 320mb Superclocked version. It simply rocks. Coming from an O/C'd ATI 850 XTPE, it's been a revelation. Got mine at the 'egg. Super price. Excellent package etc. And yeah, I leaned on that Tom's VGA comparison pretty hard when making the decision - max resolution I'm gonna run into the foreseeable is 1152 x 864. This card certainly has the juice at those settings. And I like the factory O/C to 580, under warranty. Runs fast, runs quiet. Folks whine about the heat - I don't know. GPU idles around 55-60, and gets into the 70's at load. But it's meant to do that. Fan's usually running at 60%, and that's quiet. Heat gets thrown out the back of the case. My rig's case gives me the ability to pull any excess heat it might generate out the side of the case, but to my hand, at least, this air is always cool.

Good to know - I'm in the same position you were before you upgraded. I'm looking at an 8800GTS or a 2900Pro, but will probably wait another month or two.
