7800 GT Problems with Oblivion

This morning, for the first time, while playing Oblivion, my computer went what I would call "nuts". Out of nowhere the screen went black, and in thinking it was a glitch in the game, I restarted the game and went back to playing normally. About 5 minutes later, it happened again, except this time, the sound started to repeat and grey lines began to appear across the screen, followed by my monitor going into sleep mode, as if it wasn't recieving a signal from my video card.

Upon restarting, to my surprise, the grey lines had now slimed there way across the bios and filled the screen. I went ahead and started normally, hitting F1 to proceed, and when it reached the Windows screen, it suddenly went blue for about 1/2 a second. This time, my computer restarted on it's own and brought me back to the BIOS, where I simply shut down the computer completely, put my hand across the video card, and could feel that it had a fever.

After about 30 minutes of the computer being shut off, I turned it back on and everything went back to normal. I headed out of the house and came back about 7 hours later, and in thinking enough time had elapsed, I ran Oblivion once more to simply check the temperature. After only 10 minutes of gameplay, the Oblivion screen went black (Since I play in windowed mode it wasn't too much of a difficulty) and I exited to the desktop via ctrl+alt+delete. I ran the nVidia Control Panel and discovered that my video card had already reached 90* Celsius! I let it cool for another hour or so while I left the house again.

After an hour had passed, I ran Madden NFL '07 for almost an hour before I exited the game and saw that the temperature of the video card was a mere 50* C. I decided I would run Oblivion one last time to see if anything had changed, and of course nothing had and my computer went "nuts" and shut down. When arriving at the BIOS screen again, I noted that the SFan1 and SFan2 were both running at 0 RPM. Now, I have no idea what those fans are, so I can't say if they were like the prior to the restart or this whole episode, I just thought it would be worth noting.

If anyone here happens to have any idea what the problem may be, if you wouldn't mind voicing your opinion that would be terrific! I figured I would stop by and check with the friendly people here at Anandtech before I go and ask for an RMA.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Regards,
MCochrane

I would start with pulling the card and checking for dust. My friend's 6600GT was having the same issues even with an after-market cooler which had it's air intake choked with dust. Next I would check the fan's speed through rivatuner or something similar and increasing it if it is low. If the card is dust free & if fan-speed is alright, but if you have an overclock then go back to stock clocks and try again. If all of this fails then probably your card might just be defective.

I agree, sounds like a heat issue. No need to limit your inspection to your video card though, RAM, CPU HS, and anything else you might notice may afford a good dusting. Keep in mind that you cant just swab around inside your case, more than likely the dust has accumulated in the fins of your heatsinks in which case you should remove them and clean them properly. Good luck.
