7800 AGP or take the plunge and go PCI-express??

Hey all..

well I have currently a 6800 GT that I run on my MSI Neo2 Plat AGP board. I have been playing Oblivion lately and love it. It runs fine at 1024 and even at times 1280 but I normally play and run everything on my 21" CRT monitor at 1600X1200 except this or any newer game. The game stutters at times and I don?t have any of the AA or AF or trilinear filtering on but overall it is ok and looks what I think to be great. I don?t play other games? just that and maybe EQ at times and the rest is all video encoding, graphics and web design for work so I never really bothered with anything greater than the 6800 GT.

I was thinking of upgrading and naturally the new crop of video cards from the 7800 to the 7900 or the 1800 or 1900 series all look great but all are PCI express except the 7800.

Would folks here suggest I make the plunge and get a new board (I have a 939 AMDx2 3800+ CPU) and get say a 1900XT with a cheap PIC express board (like Gigabyte or something) or would folks agree that just getting a 7800 AGP is just fine and should be a considerable improvement over the 6800 GT and naturally keep my existing AGP board?

On a side note do I need to change the video quality settings within my Nvidia drivers settings tab such as AA or AF or trilinear or is that overwritten by games? Oblivion has some stuff you can modify in game but again does it check my Nvidia settings first? It will either let me choose HDR ? or? AA but not both? is this a limiting factor or is HDR even working on my card?

AGP is still adequate... but I doubt anyone is going to be spending time on newer cards since PCI-E is far more capable and is the wave of the future. If you have to ask... than make the switch. I think only the most devout AGP fans would do otherwise.

Are you talking 7800gt or 7800gs? There are no 7800gt agp cards. I looked around for one and was forced to upgrade to pci-e. 7800gs is selling for $300 so might as well just upgrade and get a 7900gt for the same price.

Instead of spending $300 on a 7800gs AGP, for even less money you could get a PCIe mobo and a 7600gt. A 7600gt for $180 will perform about the same as a 7800gs for $300. And considering that you can get a much faster PCIe 7900gt or x1800xt for around $300, that should give you all the answers you need.

Re: Oblivion with HDR and AA, you can only have both features enabled in Ati x1k cards, like the x1900's and the x1800's.
