780 GTX or AMD 8000 series - I'm ready!

I just tried out crisis 3 and found out how sadly underpowered my 580 is for this game. Even if I turn it to FXAA I still only get about 20FPS average with everything else cranked. I don't want to spend $1000 on a 690 with limited options for already installed coolers. I have no problem changing out CPU coolers but have had some bad luck with video card after the fact coolers and I don't want to spend another $50 when the prepackaged ones are usually close in price to stock coolers and there is no warranty voiding.

I'm hoping ATI or NVidia release something soon in the $550 range that is at least close to the 690 for performance. Even the 680 won't really cut it for Crysis 3 when it is cranked unless you sli it and then you are in the $1000 plus range.

I hear it will probably be November before we see anything new but I'm hoping they have a rabbit ready to pull out of their collective hats.

hehe well we PC gamers did challenge them to give us a game that would bring our systems to our knees again after Crysis 2 didn't even make them sweat.......

So they did ;)

How much does a second 580 cost? That should be enough horsepower to run Crysis 3, unless you run into VRAM issues.

Yeah, I'd run into VRAM issues. A good second 580 would be about $370 and I'd still only have 1.5GB of VRAM - not enough to take advantage of the game. Plus I'd probably have to spend another $120 on an even bigger power supply as that wasn't a particularly energy efficient card. This game requires over 2GB if you want to use the high end capabilities. Even two 680's with 4GB of RAM is barely enough for that game. It would also make my system louder which I really don't want. I have one of the quietest PCs around (I made it myself with all super quiet parts) and it is still louder than I'd like. As one doctor said after giving me a hearing test "Jeez, you could hear the grass grow"

If you look at the benchmark tests on various sites if you crank it up to very high graphics and use the better texturing, you'll get slowdowns even with 680 SLI. At the scene where you get over run by the squids it becomes choppy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOgPaXrFOzs

I do not want to play this game with anything turned down - not much point for me as I love high end graphics - otherwise I'd still be happy to play the original duke nuke'm.

I'd rather get a 780 and SLI it if I find it is not enough than spend $1000 on a Titanium that is slower than the older 690 card.

For the record, I don't go over my vram limit of 2GB when I have 2x SMAA on and everything maxed out in the video settings at 2560x1440 in Crysis 3. Only when I load up the MSAA would it report over 2GB usage.

I don't even know if it's very accurate as I have read conflicting reports of EVGA precision and MSI Afterburner reporting incorrect (bloted) vram usage.

By 2014 mid, take or give a few months
there will be cards from either amd or NVidia or both
in the $500-650 range
which will be anywhere from 15-40%+ faster than a titan stock at the very least.
and needless to say will make a 690 as redundant as a 590/6990 today.

As to exactly when this will happen can vary from Q4 2013 to Q3 2014 for the launch of such beasts.

No.
AMD is hitting power wall with GCN, so 20nm is needed to have anything that beats Titan 15-40%.

Now figure in another 28nm refresh, and 20nm should be expected around Xmass 2014.

IF...
Everything goes well.

You are wrong. And there is a good 80%+ chance that 20nm will be released within Q3 2014 or before. And I would expect the 20nm flagship oc to be at least 40-50%+ faster than a stock titan.

To get 15% more performance than titan stock or the performance of titan high oc, amd only needs a card that is 10-15% faster than a 1300mhz 7970 ghz and that is easily possible in the next 1.5 years.

Thanks - I guess you are just saying what I'm saying - I want to play the game FULL everything and that includes 8x MSAA and I'll need more than 2GB.

MMMMMmmmm I'm a bit more confident in when we'll see 20nm GPU's. TSMC said 20nm will ramp to higher volumes this year than 28nm did in 2011. I know the rumor is Apple bought up all the initial wafers, but give Apple November, December, and January worth of all the 20nm product and then a combination of lower demand by Apple and increased capacity by TSMC will allow AMD and Nvidia to get their 20nm cards out. I'm guessing April / May for 20nm GPU's hitting the market.

I wouldnt spend more than 200$ for a 580. 6970's are at 150 - 165 and they have 2GB.

I wouldn't spend more than $200 for a gtx 580 either. An oced 580 isn't faster than a stock/oc 7850/7870, they are about equal.

And you could perhaps sell your call for about $200-250 and add the same sum plus a bit extra and buy 660ti sli or even 670 sli. Even if you just buy 660 sli I would say it isn't really that much worse than your 580 sli and doesn't cost as much either, in fact you save potential money.

Anyway, 660ti sli should compete with 580 sli and 670 sli should beat it fair and square.

I guess I don't understand the point of these posts. If we've already established that 680 SLI barely is enough to play 8xMSAA with all settings very high (which I've said more than once is my goal) and 2GB cards will be short on memory, what is the point of buying two new 660ti cards, or two new 670 cards, two new 6970s, a second 580 cards or 14 new 570s?

Yeah in a way. You can run 8x MSAA if you want sure, but I'll be honest. The quality difference between 8x MSAA and 2x SMAA really doesn't seem that worth it when it comes to the performance drop.

Memory rewrite might enable another 10%. Then it will probably hit a wall.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to have to control my impatience and just get the 780's or 790s whenever they are released unless AMD pulls through with an 8000 series soon.

I get the gut feeling that they are both sitting on refreshes waiting to release them closer to 20nm availability. If they were to have release them now, then they'd need another refresh before 20nm.

If, for example, they knew 20nm would be available for retail production Christmas 2014 then waiting until 2nd half 2013 (back to school time?) would make that generation's cards stay viable at retail until 20nm.

Waiting for the return of the fx5800 ultra,or a card that is simply hot, super loud but all about performance sorta like the 6990 LOL.

Would not mind a card louder right now then a 6990 if the thing would spank a titan into submission while costing only $600,just have some awesome headphones and it would be alright.:)
