Anyone ever own one of these? I love them and I was thinking about getting one to toy around with. Not a show car but just a fun spring summer fall car. I came across this one. My only concern is it's 131000 or 231000 miles...

Will it be near impossible to find parts for these cars in case I need to replace something?

Car looks great, but I would not want one with auto. I drove the original 240's and the stick adds to the fun factor.

I haven't owned one, but I do know that they used to rust like CRAZY. Perhaps this really was an AZ car, but reading that the paint is 'bubbling' in a few places has me worried already.

From what I remember, they were fairly reliable and fun cars. I'd pay a garage close to the seller to check it out first though. Garages usually charge an hours labor to give the car a good going over and in the case of a 30+ year old car, it is money well spent. There are just too many things that you can't see with the car on the ground.

For the price, I'd think it would certainly be a fun Spring / Summer car. Please remember to check the tire date codes. On older cars like these it is very common to have tires that have great tread, but are over ten years old. Just remember that you might need new tires when you are figuring out how much this car will end up costing you.

The internet has been a blessing and a curse to old car owners. Now, you can find almost anything you need for your old car, but now everyone thinks their old car parts are worth more. I certainly suggest that you find an online owners group and ask some questions there. Just like you come to AT.com to buy PC parts cheaper then ebay, etc..., you really could use the expertise and contacts that other owners of 240/260/280's have.

I think those were one of the first cars that I remember thinking "sporty" as a kid. I would not get it in automatic as well though...but then again, I wouldn't get anything in automatic for as long as my left leg works.

I've owned several of the 280xz's over the years. I still have an 83 turbo w/T-tops but I don't drive it much. For some reason I didn't love this one as much as the others. There are plenty of parts/parts cars around for the 280z's so parts shouldn't be a problem. I'd bet on the mileage being 231k but just email the guy and ask. I wouldn't buy it sight unseen but from the cheap seats it looks ok.

And everything deadken said was spot on.

Ive owned:

1977 280z in 1989, bought it as my first sports car for $1000. It was a theft recovery and trashed. It overheated all the time, but I was now a Z fan. Some lady hit the right quarter panel and caused $1100 worth of damage. Sold the car as is for $900 and plowed the $2000 into my next Z.

1978 280z in 1990, bought from the original owner! It had all the orginal parts including the stereo, spare, tools, air can, you name it. The only problem was it had a bad paint job when the owner tried to touch up a spot and wound up spray painting the whole car! He even left a hand print! Anyway, the engine was in superb condition and the interior rocked so I picked it up. A month after buying it, a lady slid into my rear bumper. Took the insurance money, found a replacement bumper from a junkjard and had the whole car repainted. It was fun, fast car that would peel out in first and second gear when I had the clutch plate and master cylinder changed. There are other tweeks I can let you in on if interested.

It lasted about two years before the frame started to rust through and the brakes would not stop squealing despite being "Midasized". Realized years later that its better to get rotors from a dealer than going with aftermarket ones. Sold the car for $2,000 and bought an 1984 Porsche 944 in 1992 for $8,000 (one big ass lemon, but a sweet ride with a new metallic maroon paint job that drew the most attention until I started buying Miatas and Mercedes).

Also had an 1986 300zx and an 1988 300zx.

I had a pair of 81/82 280zs a few years back. Bought them both for $120 each. One coupe with a 5spd and a 2+2 with t-tops and an auto. The 5spd coupe had severe rust problems (firewall, drivers and passenger footwells were gone, hatch well was going), but the engine and transmission were 100%. I was going to cut the front off the 2+2 and weld it onto the coupe, but now that I think about it, what I should've done was transplant the 5spd and the coupe's interior into the 2+2 and used the coupe as parts car. I sold them together for about $400 a year or so down the road when I bought my Accord.

I want another Z car.

Sounds criminal to get it as auto. Looks like it could potentially be a lot of work. I'd not get it unless you have a lot of free time, but that goes for any "project" car.

I'm jumping between a Datsun and a 70's or 80's Corvette in AUTO. yes I said it. I drive a Dodge Neon lol, I want something that's fun which is probably 90% of cars out there.

Same thing its an AUTO..

I dont know too much to have the balls to pick on up. So instead i'm going after a NA miata. =) priced the same, 10 years newer. can always sell it w/o taking a HIT. i dont know if i can say the same for the Z.

The Corvette has way more engine than the Datsun, even the turbo. With the right suspension set up it can handle as well if not better though.

$2000 i think... I dont know the guy. its just a forum i post on.

Unless you've got good mechanical skills I'd recomend a pass on that one. To replace the exhaust manifold gasket you have to remove the intake also. Huge job and the turbo makes it even worse. Figure at least $600 and maybe as much as $1K to do the job at a shop. Also, the exhaust gaskets are not common to go out on these and even more so not at only 30K miles. Something else is probably going on. Maybe a bad install and the bolts are loose, maybe a warped manifold, maybe both.

Looks like an overall pain in the ass to have one of these old cars. Unless you really love to work on them. I think that buying one and expecting it to be a mainly maint. free driver is not realistic (if that is your goal). Do not want. If I got an old car like that I'd get one with a big fan base for parts reasons.

Yeah, I'm kind of doubting it now.... oh well.

I want to get a car that is abundant but still has character.

Do you think a 80's Vette would be a good choice? I may make a new thread now.

just get a miata. Finding one with an auto will be pretty hard though since even the ladies got manuals in those :D

i see plenty of auto miatas.

but i would much get a vette. I've been looking at C4/C5's as they are nearing the 10k mark.

that or the miata, most NA miatas are sub 5k . i can link you to a manual 95 miata with a supercharger for sub 5k, it will most likely be 10 times easier to repair and about 5 times less likely to need repairs...I'm looking for a stock one myself for 2-3k
