Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-TG965MP-RH with a northbridge Intel G965 Express Chipset. FSB is 1066/800/533 MHz.

Does anyone knows if this mod is applicable to this motherboard? Will the BIOS accept the Xeons? Advice on Xeon model is also needed. I have a spare E5450 but I guess it will drop from 3GHz to 2.25GHz. Definetely going for a 4 core cpu. According to the manual the board can take the Core 2 Extreme cpus.

I have found a list and the P965 and 945GC chipsets worked without a BIOS mod, taking an X5260 and an E5110 respectively.

I don't think it would hurt it to try, as long as you have the correct "sticker mod". At worst, what will happen? No boot?

Reset OC settings to defaults before installing a new CPU though.

this board might just support the 65nm CPUs, make sure the bios supports any 45nm first, and in any case, it's a board made for fsb 1066, if it does support c2qs just go for a Q6600, it's going to be as good as the xeon at 2.2GHz anyway.

it will probably work with the mod and some lga 771 CPUs, but it might only work with 65nm 771 xeons...

That's what I'm afraid of.

In the list I've found the X5260 is 45nm and the P965 takes 65nm cpus. I wonder how he did it. There shouldn't be much difference between the two chips and I guess I have to try to find out. I hope the integrated graphics won't be a problem.

Edit. I have found this Xeon, an X3230 which is socket 775, just a drop in replacement without the need of mods. It is identical to a Q6700 with slightly better wattage and temperature.

Affirmative.. I've been running the X3230 as a replacement for the Q6600 for awhile now. It's a drop in replacement, and improves performance about 20% over the Q6600. Without a FSB of 1333, it's the best you're going to do..
