768 RAM = Too much??

I hope this is the right forum but regardless, is it true that Windows XP will not utiltize more then 512 mb of RAM to it's fullest potential? I upgraded from 256 > 512 recently and noticed a HUGE difference when I multi-task and the comp doesn't slow down that much anymore but will adding 256 more be worth it?

I am using DDR 333 Kingston 2700 512 mb chip and am waiting for a DDR 333 Samsung 2700 256 mb chip.

Thanks.

There isn't such thing as too much RAM. Windows XP can handle gigs of RAM easy.

<-- 1 GB of PC3200 goodness.

Windows ME (and 98 I think) is the one that does not manage 1gb well. I had to edit the reg. so it wouldn't crash with 1 gig.

yeah you did, I've actually heard that WinXP doesn't really start to "shine" until you've got at least 1GB, lol (256 being a minimum and 512 being a good standard to not lose out)

well on a sidenote i was expecting Samsung to ship me a new stick of 256 but they just told me there's no warranty on their ram. Oh well I'll just buy 128 since more ram = more better 🙂

If anyone here has ever played Battle Field 1942 with 64 bots on or the mod DC with 64 bots turned on in Co-Op mode you will notess if you dont have 1GB or 768MB of ram that your game will slow down to a crawl this is because the game use's 680MB of ram to run this amount of bots and if u dont have that number or more your hard drive will be used for virtual memory i think more games will want more and more ram as time goes on 1GB will soon be mandatory/

If it isnt already 512MB isnt enough anymore. not for some of the new games that are out now.

That's true but I don't play games. I multi-task a lot though, having Photoshop, Word, AIM, and about 4 browsers open with winamp on top... and I sure see the difference the 512 mb made...

Damn right... 1gig of ram is well worth it if you do stuff like this. If you only surf the web and do word docs then forget about it 512 is enough. Personally I really want 1.5 - 3 gigs in the future...
