Which one would you go with?

I had a poll and was trying to edit it and accidentally deleted it. Oh well! :)

Unless you're going to be running a small server, this should be a no-brainer in the 768/128's favor :)

it really depends on your use of internet....
if you are just a internet browser, going through webpages...go for 768

If you are a gamer, do some FTP... i prefer 384

768/128, because I don't do any sustained uploads besides the usual uploads when surfing the net regularly and routine website maintenance. On the other hand downloads are very important to me as I frequently download large files that are naturally primarily dependent upon sheer d/l throughput.

But that's me- I have no idea how you access the internet, nor what your uses are on the internet... and so I couldnt begin to guess what might provide you a larger benefit.

I concur. Why severely reduce your download (most important) speed for 3x faster uploads if you're not going to use them? My cable is rated at 2.8mbps down and 128kbps up... I love it, I rarely ever upload, so it doesn't bother me one bit.

Well, it is mainly used for gaming and a small dedicated gaming server. Sometimes I use it to transfer large files via ICQ.

The reason is because I have the option to go 384/384 at $10 extra. And the other night I hosted a game and there was some noticeable lag (making it hard to play).

BTW I hope you are paying very very little for that if you decide to get 384/384, or even 768/128.. that is some mad slow speed. Even when everyone's bogging down my cable, the speed tests indicate 1.8-2.0mbps.. I've seen a really really low one once, which was 1.2mbps. And that seemed very very slow! I don't know how you can possibly live with 768, much less 384.. 384 comes out to 48KB/s! Blech!

Of course, it's still better than having dialup.

If you don't care about high download speeds, choose the 384, since you indicated 'server'. 48KB/s is far better than 16KB/s. :)

cable speed really depends on the amount of users within a certain node, some company will put more users on one node, some will put less...thats why people are getting varied speed from places to places....

The other option is going back to cable. The reason why I went from cable to DSL is because our cable provider was not capable at the time to handle the demand. So it became very slow and a burden to log on at specific times of the day. I don't know about now?

DSL has been good to me thus far. Every time I wanted to get on there wasn't a problem, my service has never been down since I got it two years ago. Unlike my cable ISP (Hawaii RR).

The lag in the game you were hosting might have nothing to do with your bandwidth - how many people were in the game? which game was it?

Sometimes it will only be 3 players, other times 4-5. The game is Ghost Recon.

If uploading is more important to you go with 384/384. My upload is capped at 128, so my max send is around 15kb/s. My average send is about 8kb/s which is very slow.

depends what you wanna do. If you wanna host, get 384/384. If you just wanna download, get 768/128. I personally would get 384/384.

I pay quarterly, about $90 every 3 months.

The price is no object, I look for reliability, and thus far DSL has offered just that. So paying an extra $10 bucks wouldn?t really matter to me. As long as I get what I paid for. If 384/384 will improve my performance to host games, then I will try it for a month and see what happens. I can always go back if I don?t see any improvement.

It does seem like the majority here would rather go with 384/384. The download part I will probably miss, but I?m sure it wont make that much of a difference (I hope)?

Dude, there is no question here. If you are hosting games then you need the 384/384 synchronous line. With the 760/128 you could host a 4 player game at MOST...and that would most likely be quite laggy. Not only are you limited by the 128 upload speed which every player is sharing, but the line is also asynchronous which means you can't send and receive info at the same time - which you need when hosting games. If I had that option for $10 I would snag it in a heartbeat. You could probably host an 8-10 player game comfortably on the 384/384 line.

I'm almost sure that's not true - ADSL just means the upload and download speeds are different from each other.

I'd go with 768/128. While the upload will be better with 384/384, it's still relatively slow and wouldn't be enough for a decent FTP server IMO, and 384 down is extremely crappy.
