I recently upgraded to the Bronze+(XDSL, 768/128) service from my original 256/64 ADSL.

To my dismay my speed increase was only 20% instead of the at least 200% I was expecting.

I live 6 city blocks away from the CO(near 2000').
The line coming out of the phone box is a new 22 gauge wire and it rans only about 30' before reaching my modem.

I'd like to pin point the problem(line, ISP or CO), but it would be good to know what everybody else is getting for this service.

At about 1000 ft from the base, we were getting an average of 60-70k/sec on GTE's 768/128 Bronze package. Depending on the other side, sometimes it could peak to 80-90k/sec.

BTW, we were using GTE lines with GTE as our ISP. Well, now Verizon. Whatever.

I've got Ameritech 768/128, and I average 640/90. Try running the "Tweaks" applet from www.dslreports.com and then on the same page, read how to Tweak your regristry for a faster connection, It does work some. ( Use the "verbose" option when running the tweaks test ).
Ooops, I forgot to add, I am about 9,500 feet according to dsl reports.

The tweaks really don't help that much, but I guess if you're trying to squeeze some extra juice ...

Some quick tips:

- high frequency devices (gigahertz phones, etc) interfere with the dsl line. ditch 'em.

- minimize the upload bandwidth drainers (that means NO ftp servers or Napster) it'll zap your download bandwidth.

Thanks guys, now I feel really pissed.

I've done all the tweaks. And I'm also with GTE.

I don't have gigahertzes, but I wish I did. And I also don't use Napster or an FTP server.

On the other hand I run a site on the other computer, but my hits are very far in between. Can't think of that being the cause of my paltry 31k/s download. I haven't checked my upload yet.

So I definitely have a problem.
I'll hit my ISP first, since they were down twice on the last three days. And they should be very vunerable to complains right now.

On the brighter side I found out that there is a new service coming from GTE. It downloads at 1.5 and uploads at 512.
Anybody heard of it yet? I think it's called g.lite
It may be the right time for me to change ISPs since I heard the new service will require a new modem and some other new stuff on your line.

Thanks again for the confirmation.
