i had heard, but i finally have the chance to see, w/ a tbird at 1.5 (10x150), a 7200rpm drive, 256mb ddr at cas2, V5 5500, all of this on an epox 8K7A - this thing is slick as snot. very noticeably faster than the same setup on an A7V133. (I love that you can rotate boards thru your system and sell 'em for at least 75% of your cost - its a win win)

I have found the same to be true. The memory controller of the 761 is top notch as well. I gotten some of the highest memory scores ever with this board and 512mb of Crucial PC2100....especially with the data prefetch of the A4. :)

So it sounds like the Epox board is the one to go with, regardless of whether you're going to push it or not... What's a good, relatively inexpensive vid card to go with this?

Well, if you really need to be stingy, you could get a Radeon LE and overclock it for a decent video card for the price.

Well, my other option is to keep the Voodoo3 3500 I've got and just buy a replacement for the old machine (Athlon 650). Which would be better, 3dfx or ATI in this case?

For the old Athlon? I'd still buy the Radeon LE. With the stock heatsink (no fan), I got it to the retail Radeon DDR speeds and was getting 200+ FPS in UT with a 1.2 GHz T-bird.
