I'm not going opteron for a while... (maybe 2-3 years) I'm not going back to high-mhz. single cpu systems... What's a power hungry guy to think of my aging mpx platform?

Intel?

I'd rather not... I'd rather see a new MP"x" chipset from AMD... Dual channel ram, higher FSB, AGP 8x, SATA, etc...

Anyone else on board with me?...

Yea I agree. So far they are really good and the only chips out so far are the early ones. The nForce3 should really show what the opteron has to offer.

I'm not avoiding Opteron. Oh, it WILL happen... I just don't see mobo makers sticking on an 8151 tunnel for all my "professional" agp cards anytime soon... (as with the MPX) I'm not going to be the ginny pig for 'company-X' this time around (ERRRR. get it right the first time around, or don't make it...) And I'm not buying any more graphics cards damnit! :D Not gunna do it...

We need 1 more chipset for Athlon MP

Is the nForce3 MP capable?

I think the question should be "is Opteron MP-capable?" Remember, each CPU has its own memory controller and they were built for glueless scalability. Look at the diagrams here. I know the VIA chipset for Opteron workstations supports either single or dual, so let's see if nVidia decides to do likewise.

As for an updated version of the MPX, I doubt that'll happen. AMD needs to roll out AMD64 and build momentum, not second-guess themselves and compete with their own new platform. What exactly are you doing with your system that isn't sufficiently handled by dual AthlonMP 2800+'s?

but AMD64 isn't slated until Sept. +/-. We'll see server boards with that damn onboard 8meg ati rage video, slanted dimms, onboard scsi?... (all the stuff I don't need, & nothing I do... ummm, I like to overclock too if you catch my drift) features man, features :) Who knows how long it will take after that, to bring a workstation board worth buying to market... 6 months? 8 months? (see my previous post) but good point we'll see.

3ds, Animation, & that huge cpu eater... -Raytracing- etc. etc... (all that stuff)... I guess It comes down to the fact that I'm sick of seeing a carrot out in front of me, but I can't touch it yet... Time after time it seems, we get 'server' and / or desktop boards at launch... Never a solid WS board... guys like me gotta wait... (maybe the price I pay for being in a 'smaller' market space...)

Now on that link you posted... :D ... Lordie, Lordie, gimme 40! Thanks for that one! Very cool...

If you're doing 3D modelling/rendering/animation, you might want to acquire a second license, build a second system, and network-render on all the CPUs at once. There's strength in numbers.

I know what you mean about 3D modelling & animation... there's no such thing as "enough" CPU power.

I don't wanna be rude or anything... But I did have a look at your system there & I'd say that'd fit in pretty well here at the end of this line of towers I'm looking at in my office....

As a "print" server :) doh! - sorry bout that
