7600GT vs x1800xt

With the price drop on the x1800xt, I am very tempted to pick up this card. However, I am in a bind of sorts. I just recently ordered an xfx 7600GT card from newegg for 175 dollars (came with a 30 or 40 dollar rebate, can't remember, but it wasn't instant, you have to mail it in) and its been over a month so I cannot return it. I am really set on playing Oblivion and I've heard from numerous sources that the x1800xt is the route to go. But is it worth all the hassle to try to sell my brand new xfx 7600GT just to get the x1800xt? Or should I just stick with what I have right now? Oh yeah, I recently ordered a gigabyte ds3 along with the core2duo e6300, if that might help. Thank you for your opinion fellas.

I'd say just stick with it and wait for the new cards to come rollin' in. It'll play Oblivion pretty well, just not as well as the X1800XT.

When you say wait for the new video cards, how long exactly is this wait? I would assume when the new cards come out, they'll be rather expensive. I suppose that means the current cards right now will drop in price, and as such, what should I be looking at? I really don't want to spend more than 200 dollars for a video card right now. This is the brand new video card that I have still in the box right now http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814150141 ...if I use it I'm pretty sure I won't get as much for it should I want to get a newer video card. I'm thinking my best bet is to try to salvage whatever money I can get for this and go for a new card. I'm just not sure however. Any additional advice?

Depends on what you can get for your 7600GT. If you don't lose much ($10-$20?) then I say go for it.

The X1800XT will spank a 7600GT into the stone age, it's better than a 7900GT unless you volt-mod them.

I would send in the rebate, see if I could sell the 7600GT new for $125 or so (card -rebate -$10 to $20), and get either the X1800XT 256 or the X1900GT, whichever I could get the best under $200 deal on. When the X1800XT whups up on the X1900GT in oblivion it's the more expensive X1800XT 512 that the reviewers are using. I would like to find some numbers that compare the two with 256megs. I got a BBA X1900GT for $168 myself and am happy with it. I would also read AT's new midrange graphics card article. That being said, that 7600GT is a good card and I would consider it a good value after the rebate. It sounds like you've already decided to replace it though. Remember though that Oblivion favors the ATI cards and that the 7600GT will show itself off more in OpenGL games.

I think you should stick with the 7600GT until DX10 and G80/R600 comes out. The X1800XT is a good card, but it's not exactly the newest tech anymore, and when newer cards come out prices on the X1900 series are likely to drop also.

BTW, I know someone who plays Oblivion on a 6600GT, so you're more than fine with a 7600GT for now. I have OC'd mine a bit, and I can get good FPS in nearly all games. NFS: MW, for example, is a very demanding game, and I get 30-40 FPS at 1280*1024 with FULL AA/AF/Effects.

Depends on how much eye candy you want to run with Oblivion and at what res you play at. I'd look over these two articles: High-End Cards and Mainstream Cards. The 7600GT does get spanked pretty hardcore but you'll have to decide if the eye-candy settings mean a lot to you.

XFX has a double lifetime warranty, so you should be able to get a very good price for it since you are offering it up with peace of mind. eat the small difference and buy a better card. There is a X1900GT for $200 after $100 MIR@the egg. The X1800XT is a sweet deal too.

Yup.
At stock, my 7900GT was a POS.

Only by doing the volt mod has it actually represented value for money.

i don't understand the dilemna... the x1800xt is significantly better than the 7600gt in every way; the 7600 isn't even in the same league...
