Wondering what people would pick if the parts are both the same price - gaming lightly under DX9 only - maybe some Guildwars or WoW usage depending on the PC it does go into but nothing that would come close to top end graphics usage

I've used 7600GT's before and they're great cards but don't know how the 8600GT stacks against them - looked at a few reviews and usually get a mixed answer

Anyone got first hand experience from both cards?
and I'm talking vanilla models not OC or anything

This has come up before. That time I said 7600 first, but the 8600 is the better choice. In DX9 games they are about even, but if you do get any new games such as crysis or CoD4, the 8600 is much better.

I'd be looking at getting a 8600GT for about $60 which is the "average" going price on most 7600GT's i've seen these days

What about considering something else? Newegg has a Radeon 2600XT for $55 after rebate with free shipping - should be similar performance and really cheap to boot.

I refuse to do anything with a rebate ever - period
I look at pricing before rebates and make the choice based on that amount. If I happen to buy something with a rebate its solely due to a great *pre* MIR price. Making the possible MIR icing on the cake. Call me old fashioned but I like my savings now not in 6-12 weeks.

I might look at that card though as a suggestion - Zap - thanks for the advice on 2600XT

7600GS is about 6600GT speed :( I had one for a bit. Played Titan Quest badly at 1440x900 on high detail with a C2D 6400.

2600XT / 8600GTS > 8600GT > 7600GT > 7600GS

ATI's drivers have gotten much much better for their new stuff.

The 8600gt is slightly faster, and in newer games its performance lead further increases. It also has better image quality in games.

decided to get the 8600GT for $60 - found a few 7600GT's in the 50-60 range but it doesn't look like there is a huge amount of difference in performance

8600GT is slightly better than 7600GT in older games, but in newer games theres a more significant difference in performance.
