how does the Evga 7600GT 256 stand up to today's games? Unreal 3, BF2142. I've seen benchmarks on tomshardware but i am looking for some personal experiences.

Also is there a big difference between 7600gt single mode and 2x 7600gt sli mode? I have heard yes and no.

say the system specs are as follow
gigabyte nforce570sli mobo
amd x2 5000+ cpu
OCZ 2GB DDR2 800 PC6400 ram
250 GB 7200 rpm barracuda sata
windows xp pro sp2

also, in order to sli a 7600GT on a nforce 570 chipset mobo, do you need the same exact card ie another 7600gt, Or can you use say a 7900gs with it? thanks!

Not very good. Nvidia designed those with very low shader in mind. With new games it gets destroyed by 8600gt and 2600xt.

Ok well here is my system, these are parts i have accumulated over the past few months. I'm hoping to build a decent rig for Hl2, World of Warcraft, Hellgate, Unreal Tournament 3. I want a system that can play these games at 1280 x1024 medium settings smoothly. I mainly play Wow and Hl2 DOD and CS. I figured i would get into Unreal 3 seeing as i loved unreal 2k4. I want an Sli compatible videocard also

gigabyte nforce570sli mobo
amd x2 5000+ cpu
OCZ 2GB DDR2 800 PC6400 ram
250 GB 7200 rpm barracuda sata
windows xp pro sp2

I need a videocard, there is someone here at my school selling a brand new 7600GT Evga 256 for 50 dollars. I was thinking of getting this and getting a 7600GT later down the line for SLi.

I also have an option of buying my friend's used BFG 512 7950GT for 100 dollars. Which path should I go, or neither of these? thanks!

How much use is on the 7950 GT? If it's been used for more than a year or so, I wouldn't want it. You could always buy an 8600 GT - as fast or faster than 7950 GT at your resolution. You could also step up a price point and get a blazing fast 8800 GT when it hits $200 or less.

I'd get the HD2600XT -- newer drivers seem to put it at 8600GTS level. Or, yeah, wait for the cheapest of the new middle-high range cards (8800GT 256mb or whatever AMD calls the slower of their next offerings).

well i want to stay nvidia for SLI and match my mobo, also my limit is no more than 150. the 7950 is about a year old. ill look into the 8600GT. thanks is the 8600GT much faster than the7600GT though, tomshardware VGA charts says not.

I like my 7600GT but with today's newest games you'd sacrifice performance...so I'd say below is your best bet as of now...but it's still kind of overpriced currently(512 MB). Or wait until 8600GTS drops in price....personnally wait until the 8800 GT drops under 200 after the inflated prices or see how much ATI's new cards cost.

The 256mb version of the 8800GT should be right around $150 (or at least, that's the MSRP) in a few weeks, after the release of ATI's new card. I think the Tom's Hardware charts were done with much older drivers which were optimized for the 7600 GT and not the 8600. The latter is significantly faster, though. It's approximately as fast as the 7950 GT for $50-80 less, and the 8800 GT is twice as fast as either.

If the 8800GT's are going to be around $150 in a few weeks, any idea as to what the 8600's will be at?

I just bought an 7950GT 610M XXX edition just to replace a 7600GS and its a totaly different gaming experience now even though it does run very hot, 115C flat out :Q (I guess that's what the XXX means :) ) I'm just about to up the systems memory too because at present its still running DDR Ram and as I can get DDR2 so cheap now I'm gunna do it.

Aquamark 3 scores have jumped from approx 15000 points to 90000 points (standard clocks apart from the obvious GPU) using the new 7950GT and I'm expecting higher after switching to DDR2 :)

Destroyed ? More like barely beats. The 2600XT is slower than the 7600GT though barely. All 3 are competitors.

Go with the $100 7900GS by FoxConn at newegg. It's a pre oc'd version that some people are getting to arround 650/1800 o_O . Also it comes with games and a PC controller :)
