Hi everyone,

Greetings!

I'm about to buy a new video card and I'm confused about what to pick between these two gfx cards.

8600GT or 7600GT?

I've googled this issue and all of them are old already. Most of them (specifically 7600gt vs 8600gt threads) are posted on the middle of 2007.

The old threads said that 7600gt beats 8600gt in some games and stuff. Some people disagreed saying that 8600GT is better all the way because of dx10.

The reason why I ask what is better this 2008 is because we all know that there are Nvidia driver updates, vista sp1 beta update, all sorts of updates .. Did it make any difference with the 8600GT performance over the 7600GT?

*A lot of people said that the new nvidia driver update fixed the 8600gt problem. After applying the update, 8600gt beats 7600gt all the way ... Is this true?

Another reason why I ask is --- Since its 2008, is it better to buy the 8600gt because there are more games that are dx10 ready ..

Nowadays, what is more practical/wiser to buy??

Here in our country, the price of 7600gt is exactly the same as the 8600gt ... literally exact!

Anybody has insights about this?

Btw, I'm not a heavy gamer but I just want games to work (even in low/medium graphics) when I plug it in my computer :D

*Also, I can't buy the 8800gt or any other videocard because its too expensive. Its just 7600 or 8600

THank you so much

The benefits of DX10 is moot if games don't properly support it, performance tanks when in "DX10" mode, and graphical quality isn't really that much different from DX9. That's where DX10 is at right now, it's not worth jumping through hoops to get it.

I say, if you can get a 7600GT for cheaper than the 8600GT, go for the 7600GT. You're not missing out on much by not going DX10 or having "DX10 Compliant" hardware to run games in DX10.

Besides, DX10 requires Vista, and we all know how great that is, right? ;)

According to Toms, overall fps, the 8600 only beats out the 7600 by 3 slots (~45pts)
http://www23.tomshardware.com/...6&model2=854&chart=318
8600GT's DX10 abilities are useless in games (not that DX10 has taken us by storm/wow'd us) and really only useful for aero effects in Vista. The 8600GT can however take some load off of the cpu while playing high def video. The 7600GT does a good job at this too I'm sure. Im guessing you can get a used 7600GT for pretty darn cheap these days.
So if you must buy brand new, go 8600GT as they are LITERALLY the same price, but if you don't mind going used, im sure the 7600GT is a clear winner.
According to toms, the HD2600XT is tied for the $100USD PCI-E slot w/ the 8600GT, so if the 2600XT is cheaper, get that.

I was going to call BS on a 8600GT beating a 7900GTX, but I clicked the link first, rightfully so. Doesn't beat it by anything signifigant, barely marginal, but wow... wow... And its definatly beating the 7600GT by a GOOD margin in modern games (ie '08). Yes sir, you have your answer. Yes we bash the 8600GT, but if you rarely game, and when you do its at an ungodly 1024x768, it will do the job.

Thank you replies .. its very helpful ..

Yeah, I hate Vista but I got no choice but to live with it :( .... If I could only downgrade without paying :)

I guess I'll go for the 8600gt ... unless someone objects and gives an explanation :D

Thank you so much for your help!

EDIT:

I just read the post of YEPP .. thanks for the links :D Now, 8600GT is winning :D

Lol, if you read the old old posts/threads .. almost everyone hates the 8600GT hahaha

for games that have more shader effects the 8600gt kills the 7600gt. games like ut3 even in dx9 mode.

the 8600gt even on old games is more or less equivalent to the 7600gt. so you might as well get it, its usually only a $10-20 premium

Yeah, I think the wiser choice right now is the 8600GT ... for some reason, here in our country they have the same exact price. I would grab the 7600GT if its $30 cheaper .. I guess.

But after seeing the benchies .. ill go for the 8600GT .. Now, Im just worried about the brand because its Inno3D

Cheers
