What would you all choose to build a system with if you could pick one of these options? I do play alot of games and of course use the computer for a bunch of other general stuff like word processing and internet, but nothing like programming or video editting or any heavy cpu stuff. Thanks

7900GT + 3200 will obviously be better for gaming, and you certainly won't notice any difference in Word/internet :p

And depending on what mb and cooling you have, you can probably oc the 3200+ to at least 3500+ speeds.

I got mine running over 3800+ speeds with stock cooling...:D

The price difference between the 2 Athlons in question is tiny compared to the price difference in the video cards! Its a $40 difference in cpus, versus a $140 difference in the price of a 7900 GT versus the 7600GT.

For gaming at higher resolutions a better video card is always better to have than a faster processor. In any case an Athlon 3200+ will EASILY overclock to 2,2 GHz, the same speed as the 3500+. However it also depends on the resolution of your monitor. You may not need a 7900GT if you have a 19" LCD at 1280 x 1024.

BTW - My sempron performs better than the Athlon 3500+ when running at 2.4 GHz, which is does with no sweat.

I'd take an Opteron 144 over the Athlon 3200+. Its about the same price but has 1 MB of cache, and easily overclocks to higher speeds.

7900GT, and if you have a 19" TFT a 7900GT also, 7600GT is not enough for newest games @1280x1024 maxed out and with eye candy.

yeah 7900gt all day.

the difference in price is not the same though. a 7900gt is like $100 or more over a 7600gt. to get $100 more than a 3200+ you could get a 3800+ i think,.

So the 7900GT option wins.. not too suprising. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I know the price difference is not great, but i need to cut back somewhere :) but I was wondering if someone would bring up anything like bottlenecking issues with the 3200 and 7900gt. So between the 3200 and the opt 144 what do most people think? And how does the 144 compare to the 3200 at stock speeds?

thanks for all the replies :)

Well my 3200+ is a original e3 revision which handles overclocks very well. The opty might be a better choice at this point but you will have to overclock it for sure with the 7900gt. My stock 3200 and 7900gt at stock speeds is capable of playing most if not all games on high with all eye candy. Once I overclock it it just screams.

So If you into the overclocking straight away get the opty, if not get the venice 3200, run it stock for a few months then when you get the urge overclock it. You should be able to go 2.4 on stock cooling on a 3200+ Good Luck!
